Could be buying a 93 Legacy L... advice?

Post by f13ndus@yahoo.com »

I found a 1993 Legacy L on eBay for fairly cheap... I've checked it
out, it looks to be in fairly decent shape, and it's at a price my
small budget can afford (Hey, I'm only 17...)

My question is, he says there's some belt noise... so would I just
have to replace the belts or is there a chance it would require more
work? I'd like this car, it would be good for me (Until I save up
enough for a turbo model, that is...), but I just want to get it and
DRIVE, not do work. Anyone?

If the belt noise comes from the crankshaft pulley being out of true or wobbling be very careful. Mine did it and it cost me $3000 for the engine replacement. The crankshaft had been damaged on the end from a loose pulley. Had chirping belt for several months before the big event.....

My car is 93 Touring wagon and had 102,000 miles on it when it happened.

I had some belt noise but it turned out to be the pulley.

What happens is this: The pulley is two parts, an inner and outer
part separated with a rubber gasket of sorts. This is meant to
get rid of some/most/all of the torsional stress when starting the
engine and to damp some of those forces. The rubber had
begun to fail, and when cold, the outer ring would spin over the
inner core, making what sounded like a squealing belt.

I replaced it with an Unorthodox Underdrive pulley. Relatively
cheap, got new belts, a few hp perhaps, and dropped over 5lbs
of rotating mass on the end of my crankshaft.

Ahh... no, I don't think I'd want to do that. For that price, I can
find a turbo. ;) Is there any easy way to tell whether this is the
case? I can't actually see the car, which isn't the best idea, but
yeah, noone in Louisville sells used Legacys... the dealer only
stocks new, because he sells VW's and Volvo's as well and... yeah.

It don't look in bad shape. For $760 I'd buy it for the transmission
and AWD, assuming it is AWD. I would personally want to drive it and
look at it before I bought it, but I guess that's what you get with
ebay. Belt noise, ie squeaks is nothing, just replace belts. Subarus
need to be maintained regularly, if they are not they can get spendy to
work on/fix. Just from glance, it looks pretty good. However like I
said, I'd want to drive it first.

Just my 2 cents

Josh

BTW, where are you located, and where is this guy located

I'm in Louisville, KY, and he's in Boston, MA... if I got it it'd be
a weekend trip to get it, drive up there with someone, and then drive
it back...
