hit 20lbs on stock 92 SS

Post by g20sleeperjdm »

all i have done to my car is k&n drop in,coffee cup mod, de-snorkled, mbc and boost gadge.. i wish i had my camera phone out when this happened lol.. i was screwing around with my mbc.. i shut it and it was hitting 10-12lbs consistently.. so when i opened it, it would go back down to 5-7lbs.. something is crossed i think.. so before i left my house i turned it all the way back down again.. i'm getting on the highway boosting and i look at the boost gauge to see 12, 15, 20lbs  ! i let off because i was scared i was gonna break the turbo or lean out the engine, oil/water pump failure, ect,.. i think the waste gate got stuck closed for about 10 minutes on my way to go get my friend.. man did she pull hard! :D

Don't do that unless you desire to rebuild your engine...

You don't wanna go past 12 psi with the VF11, and no more than 10 psi without an intercooler

yeah that is weird because i experienced the same thing after i put my gauge on 2 weeks ago and my boost controller and my car is stock besides exhaust and filter it normally stayed at about 15 or so but would peak out at about 19 to 20psi?

Unless you were at 20psi for less than 1 or 2 sec. tops, your boost gauge is likely miscalibrated or the angle you are reading your gauge from is throwing off the measurement. Reason I say this, fuel cut hits at approximately 14 psi, and hits hard.

But it is fun to get that little extra boost though, no arguements there.

Funny my car would not go above 10psi sustained without hitting fuel cut - 10=OK, 10.5psi = fuel cut...
I think it may be because my car is a 4eat & any time you step on the gas for more than 3 seconds your going to hold that boost level.
On a 5 spd most folks will let off the gas between shifts allowing the boost to fall until they step on it again once the next gear is engaged were they have another 3 seconds to get the job done.

it was 1-2 seconds like i said i didn't hold it.. my boost gauge is def working properly.. i've hit fuel cut after this but it will not hit fuel cut because the wastegate was stuck closed.. i'm pushing 12lbs right now and with a new 3" tbe no cats/resn into a magnaflow free-flow muffler, the car had woken up completely

I say your boost gauge is wrong and you are killing your engine. 20psi should be impossible because -
1. The turbo isnt big enough
2. The injectors arent big enough
3. Fuel cut
Even if you somehow did hit 20psi for a few seconds the car shouldn't have gone much faster since the stock injectors are just about perfect size for the engine. You would have melted your piston

Your wastegate being stuck closed has no effect on fuel cut

+1 on the WG & fuel cut being 2 different things.

I think it is possible to hit 20psi on the VF11 but the most I've ever spiked the VF11 to was 15-16psi.
Didn't Nico claim to run 20psi on the VF11 a while back?

The turbo will be out of its efficiency range, but that does not mean it can't do the 20psi - it just will not like doing 20psi (meaning it will heat the air MORE than usual @ its optimum boost levels (could be alot or a little more heat- nobody has posted intake temp vs boost data on the VF11)) & will not be able to hold that boost level for too long.

As I recall a few of the older members were running TD05-16Gs on 370cc injectors & walbro pumps so there must be a bit of injector reserve left in the car.

Sustained 20psi on stock ej22t's will probably damage somthing.

With a FCD I have held 18psi on the TD05 - rock steady no spikes or tapering off.
Looks like it will hold 20psi OK - I hit 20psi by accident trying to turn the EVC up to 18psi, held it for a few seconds watching EGTs (which were about 1400-1450*@ 20psi) then let off & dialed 18psi in.

I'm using 440cc grey injectors on lowered base fuel pressure (for good AFR's @ low loads) on a stock SS ECU + a 380cc nozzle (5th injector!) for the alky system that is just about maxxed out & will have to be upgraded soon.

Something is COO-Coo if you are still getting fuel cut with a FCD.
