How difficult to replace wheel bearings?

Post by ericem »

Hey, just wondering if these wheel bearings are any good. I am pretty sure it's my rear wheel bearing making alot of noise. Seems like after driving on the highway for a bit the car gets pretty loud. I am pretty sure there is 1 original bearing in the back so I guess it's a good idea to replace it anyways. I remember there is a tool like doctors use to hear your heart beat whats that called?? I think I can use that and spin the wheel then listen for any grinding.

Here is the bearing's I found for cheap which is mainly why I ask how difficult is the job.

Mod edit: ericem, please read Dave's post regarding ebay links. Thanks.

Remove the hub from the car (the lateral link bolt WILL be a PITA). Then with a arbor press, press out the bearing. Press in the new bearing and reassemble.

Hardest part of the job will be taking the hub out. I doubt you have a Arbor press (harbor freight has them for 100 bucks) so you'll probably need a shop to press them out for you.

Think it's cheaper to buy the press then get someone to press it for me? only 3 bearing's realistically should have be be replaced at most. Most likely 2.

^^^ I paid 88 bucks for a guy to do it for my rear bearing. I would have rather bought the press. (If I had the space)

If I remember correctlly, we used to charge somewhere around $350 a bearing, parts and labor. And yes, there a huge PITA, and cant imagine doing it without a good quality press.

That's what I'm talkin' about. I have a rear bearing to press out over the weekend. Got a new bearing and seals to replace it with, I'll let you know how it goes.
