Sooo... I went for a drive, following my moms husband on a motor cycle, its a dual sport so we went up some gravel roads, and when we were comming back down... especially once we hit the pavement...
I noticed..........
I HAD ALMOST NO BRAKES!!!!
Holy shit... The had some for the first inch of pedal travel, once I got past that they were toast, they didnt really do much... at all...
So i got out after pulling into a long drive way, due to passing a state trooper at 80 in a 45, and got out...
Um yeah, smelt them, then looked, and they were smoking, pretty damn bad...
So i let them sit for awhile before leaving again and they still dont feel right. I'm just gonna live with them for awhile before I replace them with WRX brakes...
So yeah, that was interesting... Lets not do that again....

Hmmm... I'm thinkin.......... 4 Pots......
W/ Brembo Rotors and EBC reds...
Hopefully that will help the fade...
I'm gonna try and figure what pads chry 300c srt8s use... because after 6-7 full 90-0 stops... No fade, and no smoke... (we were breaking in the new brakes... kickass brembos if I do say so).

The've been in use for only 6 months...ericem wrote:Im betting on your pads being worn out. I heard it is possible for the pad material to slip off, maybe that is what happened. If I were you, I would grab some cheap pads for now.
I probably better pull the wheels off and look at them, just in case.

I've got the EBC reds on the impreza....they're fine for daily driver.
I'd probably go with yellows if I had to do it over again.

I'm running EBC yellows and they work great. Cold stops and after running the twisties for a while. I'm very pleased.
My suggestion to you though Smh, change out your fluid. The excessive pedal travel is not related to overheating the pads themselves. I suspect you boiled your old fluid and now have air in the system.
I've had my brakes smoking on my old car before, it's pretty amazing.

It wasnt necessarily excessive travel, I was pushing as hard as I could and not stopping, but I'll do that when i change out the brakes.skid542 wrote:I'm running EBC yellows and they work great. Cold stops and after running the twisties for a while. I'm very pleased.

I am wondering though...
Is it possible that I "de-warped" them by getting them so hot?
Suddenly, since that and letting them cool, they seem not only fine, but arent vibrating anymore, they were slightly warped before...

Stainless lines and good racing fluid does wonders. Those pads are fine on the street. I love my WRX calipers, compared to stock.

Perhaps the vibration was from uneven wear on the pads themselves and you burnt off the problem since it's not likely your brakes would work like a lathe and fix the rotor.

+1 for EBC yellows, they don't squeak and grab even when they are frozen

Have you read stoptech's whitepaper on "warped rotors"?smh0101 wrote:I am wondering though...

What Steve mentioned is probably what you experienced, and by doing some "hard" braking you wore the uneven deposits off.
That's one of the downsides from performance pads in street application. They just don't get "warmed up" often enough, and start leaving uneven deposits on the rotor which can cause brake shudder.
