MOAR PWR? Newbie needs enlightenment.

Post by Reiji Dorifuta »

Good day, fellow Legacy owners. I'm sure you might know me partially well by now but I'd like to introduce myself as the proud owner of a '93 N/A wagon. The car itself is pretty nice, but having come out of the (N/A to be fair) Supra game, it seems a bit doggy. :P

Well I've been looking around, and it seems there are all kinds of paths I can take to make this thing go faster quicker... but what? A few options seem possible, at varying levels of expense and difficult. I guess I'll begin, in "pricing order", what I've scoped so far:

-Turboing my EJ22. Not knowing the engine's overall mileage kind of irks me, but it may work. I just don't know enough about turbo cars to feel completely safe. And an ex-Legacy owner told me the engine block design is weaker? :?

-Installing an EJ22T. This seems the most straightforward but I wonder if it'll turn into a wiring mess.

-EJ20 turbo from a late-model JDM WRX STi. 240 HP out of the box - but will it be a nightmare to get running? O_O

-Newer EJ25 DOHC, say 2001 or newer. Small boost in power, seems reliable enough for my needs. But I fear I may be "short-changed" for all of my effort the first time I stomp on the gas. :?

[this one's slightly silly but I might as well list it] -EG33. Aaah, torque out the ass and can pick up over 30HP just by tweaking the ECU. But it'll probably clutter the crap out of my engine bay and hurt the car's already nose-heavy weight distribution even more.

Keep in mind I don't know a whole lot about building these kind of things on my own - and wiring is one of my weaknesses, but I'm willing to go tooth-and-nail to get some extra go-fast-ability out of my BJ6. Thanks in advance :3

You can, apparently, drop in a phase 1 DOHC EJ25 complete. You'll have to make minor modifications to the wiring harness and close off the EGR valve on the ej25 throttle body since the ej22 you have doesn't use it. It's going to give you almost as much power as a standard ej25 since the ej22 ecu still thinks it's powering a smaller engine.

Worth it?...... not if you're looking for real power upgrades...

Personally, I would sell the car and get an already running ej22turbo car and be done with it.

That means waiting six to twelve weeks at the minimum (Out-of-state title transfer... rthe new title has to go through Trenton, and we all know how streamlined New Jersey's motor vehicle system is...) ... and I already dumped a decent bit of money into the car as it is. :? So I'd rather not sell.

What do you mean by, "Phase 1", though?

The EJ25 from '95 to '99 is DOHC and called phase 1. Phase 2 is the SOHC version from '00 to present.

Wait, so they went from SOHC to DOHC back to SOHC?

Well, either way it's 16-valves... gotta love forked rockers :D

Stuff to consider I guess. What gives the EJ25 more displacement? The crank?
