So i just got a Peugeot
well, not officially yet, tomorrow im going to take a look at it and make sure its not rusted through, that would be the only thing keeping me away from it
he couldnt tell me much about it, he has no clue, but from the little i gathered i believe its a 1984 505 turbo diesel, i suppose ill find out for sure tomorrow. I will get plenty of pics, but i already know its not in great shape because i saw it sitting there almost 10 years ago and it didnt look great then.
I asked him if it ran but im 90% sure it wont start because its been sitting so long and i doubt it was ever started in those years, im just hopeful that it will turn over.

its not a big deal really, ive already looked into it and the only hard to find parts are gaskets and internals, the rest i can get from autozone for cheaper or about equal to parts for my Legacy
i already know were to get a gasket kit as well, even it is cheaper than my Subaru

Free fuel is the only way you'll make this thing worth your while...please trust me on this. Make a DEEP check for rust, don't be shy, these cars fell apart if not cared for well.
I hope it works out, it's an interesting car, and all the turbo tricks you've learned here are applicable.
Check what brand the injection pump is; Lucas does not like veg oil at all, Bosch will squirt anything you put in the tank.

wow, just buy a reel of hose, apparently none were specially fit on that car, just cut to rough length!

CHECK THE FUEL SYSTEM FOR GROWTH! This is very important. A nasty kind of algae shit grows in diesel that sits around and can jam up your fuel tank. Happens on sail boats frequently. You will need a new fuel tank. Much easier to do in a car than most sailboats (where the hulls are built around the things, necessitating the deck to be chopped up to get it out), but that's another expense and a gas tank for a Peugeot will probably not be easy or cheap to get.

Yeah, it sounds like your mind is made up and I appreciate the love of odd-balls, having wrestled with the same decisions myself, but I'd walk as well.

yeah, when i start work on it im going to take the tank out, empty it and scrub the inside, if it cant scrub it ill just use high pressure water.
i have to look and make sure the hoses are clean, but none of them had dry rot.
im going to find a place to store it for now, i think im going to pay a friend to take care of the plant life and treat the rust because i am leaving in 3 weeks for school. once school is out i will take it wherever i end up living.

i see you are just determined to do this.
so here are my thoughts:
the tank will be the least of your worries.
it will need 4 brake calipers, 4 rotors, emergency brakes and assorted parts and most brake lines replaced. a new master cylinder also.
the engine may be frozen, the rings may be broken, and a diesel needs high, good even compression to work.
all glow plugs and assorted wiring may be bad.
the turbo will probably need to be replaced.
all the electrical sensors may be bad.
many part in the engine compartment will need to be replaced.
oil pump is probably in 6 inches of sludge.
the interior is shot so the seats and many plastic pieces will need to be replaced.
the fuel injectors will be clogged.
5 tires, with spare.
the car is on dirt and has been leaching water from it to the metal parts for 10 years.
assorted rusted suspension pieces, like struts, tie rod ends and cv joints will need replacing.
no dealers in the u.s.
no ready parts supply in the u.s.
and you are a student to boot.
you will put at least 10,000 to 15,000 dollars and maybe more then that for a car worth 3000 at the most.
it will be an anchor to pull around, if it even rolls, from place to place.
i hope this brings you back to having a good look at what you are thinking.
at the most this car is a parts car.
i am not trying to be mean by saying to you that this vehicle will never, under it's own power, drive down the street on a regular basis ever again.

Sometimes you just have to learn the hard way as I did with my 240Z (although that at least ran, very well in fact, with a hi-po cam).

Yes, but valueless product is valueless product regardless of how it looked in the driveway (or rare - the Datsun was a pretty rare combo of white with blue interior and was an early 1970 model, which had a few little differences with common later cars). I chanced on the Datsun, but was looking to buy a Saab Sonnet that was there. Before that, I really wanted a Borgward Isabella because nobody knew what the hell that was. I agree this Peugeot's a bad choice, but some people just have to make those choices and learn that way.
I learned the hard way and ended up with Subarus when I was too broke wasting money on junk and had to "settle" for a GL. Neither the Saab, Datsun, Borgward, or anything else I looked at would have ended up so important in my life nor could they have lead to the Legacy that figures so largely in my books and lead me in real life to a chance meeting that resulted in my book getting published. I never would have bought a Subaru had I not been broke from junk cars. Point is, you never know what's going to happen and for me, it all worked out better than I would've imagined, especially not on the sad day I went to get the 240Z inspected (man it looked good with the wide slotted alloy Wolfraces) and was shown just how rotted the poor car was.

Who's being dishonest? If you read my posts you'll see I'm not arguing with you nor do I recommend he buy this car. I'm only reading from him that he intends to buy it anyway and I'm looking on the bright side that at least this will be a learning experience. Education always costs money, but what's this thing really going to cost him? I can't imagine he's paying more than a few hundred bucks and after a few hundred more,he'll learn as many of us do, that he's bought a toilet and call it a day. In the process, he'll learn a little about diesel engines probably and a little more pragmatism when looking for cars in the future, which in the long run will save him money. I know it worked for me and many other car guys. He also has a daily driver so it's not like he's screwing himself as far as transport goes, which is more than I can say for myself when I bought my learning experience.

Parts are going to be the biggest concern to get it back on the road. Even though places list the parts, chances are they can barely get an oil filter for it . My dad has a '79 504 diesel which needs an engine since it was overheated about 10 years ago and parked. Well I've been looking for an engine for about 2 years now and no avail. Each to their own but you've been warned. When you need parts for it, there won't be any
