Dual Stage Boost Controller

Post by SubaruNation »

alright here we are:

pic is of a standard bleed valve MBC connected on a turbo.
This should help out the folks looking for a how to plumb a MBC.

The next pic (with the little black box / 2 wires) is of the bleed MBC with the solenoid plumbed in the correct place to turn it into a 2 stage MBC.
All that has to be done is to ground 1 wire & run "+" from the switch to the remaining wire - the Red one.
That little black box connected to the MBC/Turbo is a OEM boost solenoid from a 4G63 GVR4.

The next pic is a charcoal canister purge solenoid from a Subaru that should be able to get the job done too.

Any solenoid used should be function tested which is super easy
1. take the solenoid & blow into 1 of the fittings - no air should pass through the solenoid & out of the open fitting
2. Wire the solenoid to power & ground (may take 2 tries if the harness colors are not obvious red (+) & black (-)) - this should open the solenoid & allow air to pass through - repeat the blow-thru test this time you should feel air coming through the open port.

The solenoid used should have a port size that roughly matches the MBC's bleed port (the one that remains open to the atmosphere). If the solenoid ports are too small they may not be able to bleed enough air causing the boost levels to drop.

Have fun

So how do you set the second stage boost? Are you forced to run wastegate, and then whatever the boost controller is set at? There is only one controllable level above wastegate boost. its not really a two stage controller.
Kickin' it old-school.

Call it whatever you want.
I explained this when you asked in the first post, but the bottom line is that it a cheap way to go between 2 boost levels from inside the car (2 stage = 2 boost levels to toggle between in my book).

You have to run wastegate boost (1) + whatever you set the MBC @ (1) = 2 set levels switchable from inside the car @ any time.

I expect folks can continue to improve this set-up if they like & make even more switchable levels - 3 levels should be easy adding another MBC / Solenoid & a 3 postiion switch.

SubaruNation -
The Electrical part is simple as there are just 2 wires.

Power goes from your switch/button to the (+) of the solenoid.
The other wire on the solenoid gets grounded.

Installing a unwired solenoid (closed position - no air passing through the port) onto a MBC as shown in the pic will cause boost to drop to actuator pressure.
Wiring the solenoid & flipping the switch/pushing your button (powering the solenoid) will allow the solenoid to open & will increase boost to whatever the MBC is set to.

yea Ill deffinatly post pics... I'm going for the "trucker" look on my shifter.
It's gettin -ABS activation switch( usually drive without)
- Dual stage boost controller
- maybe more....

Switches in Chrome with push /pull knobs
Im just tryin to find a nice mount....hhhmmm??????18 wheeler?

Anyway I was just going to say Your Post should be a sticky!!

And to whoever was commenting "wastegate pressure" it IS adjustable. VRG3 used a spring ....I think either direction.

Our Cars come with everything! but they are like garage race cars,

So i've been thinkin about a way to still use the stock boost controller in addition to a MBC for a second, higher boost level

And here's what I've come up with...

So in my case, when i'm driving long distances, and dont need a shitload of power, and want decent, well, at least stock mileage, I can use the stock controller for 8.7lbs of Boost.

Then with the flip of a switch and can be running 13-14lbs through my MBC...

Heres the Diagram:

Ooops i'm back sorry,,, I think I was sayin how this SDSBC (lol), could be a nice feature even after a chip Upgrade, but i also want to know how that will effect our cars?
I can't think straight today, so I'm forming NO opinion so far.
Whats up guys? whats the good, bad and ugly about the modified chip's and SDSBC's? Problem or no problem?

ha ha thank you for the gracious naming of this.

i am in no way going to build these or take responsibility for the information in this thread.

i just posted the info in here for another member, and then smh0101 dug deeper in understanding the setup.

i'd ask them for more
