Genesis: This could be fun!

Post by New92 »

http://www.leftlanenews.com/hyundai-genesis-coupe.html

I just read a recent article in 'Motor Trend' (I think?) that stated the V8 will be a top end upgrade for the coupe 6-8 mo after the initial release. Who knows this could be the next 240.

The Top Gear guys say it's ugly. I agree. What's with the dip in the rear quarter window?

Ugly or not, it's still cheap speed. Cheap isn't always good, though.

Why doesn't anyone build a rwd hatch? A Mazda3-like car with rwd would be awesome and I'd buy one in a second. I wouldn't be the only one, either. GM could build one on the Solstice/Sky platform and Mazda could use the Miata platform. Hyundai had a chance here, but instead they're just building a car for a limited market that's notoriously always looking for the newest thing.

BMW tried that w/ the 318(ti?) hatch and Benz tried w/ the C class hatch. Neither sold well, which is why BMW isn't trying to sell the 1 series as a hatch here.
Now an economy rwd hatch on the other hand...
well, I've got mine:

It's a nice move for Hyundai, but the sports sedan/coupe segment is a crowded one and it's just gonna become another sporty coupe/sedan in a year or two.

I personally would be more thrilled if Hyundai managed to make a RWD platform for the Accent. Even with the same 110hp 1.6L engine, if they managed to keep the weight at 2500lbs and offered firmer springs and shocks on the base model, it'd be the best car $11,000 could buy IMO.

I heard that too. I also heard they're partnering with Subaru and will use a boxer engine. But I've never heard of the haki rochu, so maybe we're talking about different cars?

I'm not talking about a sport hatch, I mean a practical one. My 240 and 260Zs were rwd hatches, but those are a different story. The BMW and M-B failed because they were ugly POS, the M-B very boring as well. That was also when gas was dirt cheap and people still had an aversion to hatchbacks. Then there was the image, or lack of, that said, "I'm poor, but I'm trying to pass myself off as being successful." Which is a worse image than just being poor. And you don't have to take my word for it since I hate Nazi cars, you can ask just about any BMW or M-B enthusiast and they'll likely tell you the same thing. BMW used the last generation's rear suspension and cheaped out terribly on the things and M-B wasn't much better. I briefly considered the BMW years ago, but just taking a good look at one was enough for me.

If the Mazda3 was rwd for about the same price, it would be an amazing car, Alfa Romeo's hatchbacks as well. Something like a modern day Alfa Giulia, BMW 2002 (the 1-series is NOT this), or even Datsun 510, but with a hatchback. I can't expect it to look as good as any of them, but I'll take FUNctionality.

I've been thinking the same thing for a few years now (about the need for a modern day AE86 corolla or 240sx). Something that is economical and sporty would sell very well, me thinks. I believe thats what BMW and M-B were shooting for, but ,thanks to the nature of dealers, they came off as overpriced, entry-level quality, girls cars(no offense, ladies).
I agree that we need a new rwd sporty hatch. But with today's federally mandated safety standards (to keep people safe from themselves) it seems like even a simple coupe doesn't come in under 3k lbs. Which would make 4 cly. performance underwhelming. Mazda's DISI MZR engine is a potent performer for a four, however, I wonder what the fuel efficiency would be.
Until the answer is produced by an automaker who's still in touch with the financially challange(read: cheap), performance minded populous, I'll be content w/ my 160hp, 2200lb, 30mpg, 23y/o Toyota.

I get 30 without trying too hard and mine doesn't have DI. The next generation is going to be a 2.5, which I think is a mistake - they should just make the 2.3 DI, improve the variable valve timing to do more than just adjust the timing, and add stop/start. The stop/start they're working on will use the DI system to inject fuel into the cylinder and ignite it to restart instead of relying on the starter. I agree, keeping the weight down is tough and the biggest problem. And I think what that engine could do in an aerodynamic lightweight platform (even if only in 2.0 guise) would be really damn impressive. A curse on all the mandated woos safety shit. But as for current vehicle, the 3 platform has provisions for AWD, so rwd is possible and GM could perhaps use the Kappa platform.

The Hyundai platform is a heavy sedan platform and larger than it needs to be (at least it looks that way in pictures). If they could downsize it and make a practical bodystyle, I'd possibly buy one (if I ever buy a normal car again). Never thought I'd ever say that about a Hyundai and I haven't looked under the hood of a new one in a few years, but they seem to be making huge strides and I have to admire them for it.

Call Ford. A V8 in a front-drive car didn't work for them either.

by the time the thing even comes out, everyone will already be (starting to) driving electric cars and gas will be too expensive for the average consumer to look into a v8 for transportation.

they are like 6 years too late

Oh, well in that case... F Hyundai?

I mean, I'll wait to pass judgement, but I don't expect the next coming of the glory days of RWD.

It looks too big and heavy to me and not by just my standards, but it seems like a poor man's Gran Turismo, which is a too big and heavy (albeit beautiful, though the back is bland) coupe built on the big Quattroporte sedan platform. Or even the 350Z which is a tank because the platform had to be able to work as the foundation for an SUV and a sedan.
