SVX Engine

Post by Gregg Holliday »

The reason I mentioned the SVX engine is that Paeco Industries, who
does performance rebuilds of import engines offers a 306 hp SVX
engine - and who wouldn't like that? If it fits and there is room
for a supercharger (I wouldn't mind cutting the hood), I'd be looking
at 450-480 horses (that's also taking into account lightened
flywheels, pulleys, etc). Question is, can an SVX engine swap be
performed on a manual car?

Possibly - but nothing just bolts up.

If you were willing to put the money into it, I suspect it could
be done - but you'd be looking at a bunch of custom work to make the tranny
mate - plus an aftermarket engine management system and all that good stuff.

It'd be fun though :)

I'm curious about this because in converting to either the 2.2L, 2.5,
and 3.3L Vanagons, I think all have used the same adapter plate (with
identical bolt pattern) for all these engines. So don't see why it
wouldn't "bolt-up".

I'll check on this to make sure.

But its definitely a much heavier engine. Not sure what it do to
suspension and handling.

You would have to beef up the tranny as well. 450 HP would shred your gears
if you tried to do anything too agressive. Then you'd have to figure out the
engine management, so you'd have to get a new ECU, harness, etc.

For what you'd spend on it, in time and $$... The bragging rights would be
pretty good, that is if you are into that sort of thing.

01, my two bits.

Oh... believe me, I'm into that sort of thing. Of course, I have to
wait until things settle down for me (I'm currently working as a temp
with the possibility of getting hired full-time). But regardless, if
I knew what it would take, I'd (attempt to) start planning and (of
course) saving for the work. The concept of a 480hp Scoobie with an
extremely wicked boty kit just makes me salivate (not to mention the
fact that I could race Vettes and look better than 99.9% of the other
imports out there).

As far as I know, the highest rating I could achieve with the other
Scooby engines is aprx 350 horses, which, while impressive, won't let
me tackle anything tuned by AMG, M-Power, or Saleen.

The Legacy Turbo engine, i've witness personally, can have over
500HP. The EJ22T and WRX-RA are "it" for the 4-cyl crowd.

3.3 would be cool, but yeesh!

There's a guy on this message board, as you might already know that
has converted his SVX to manual. So i'd assume it's possible to do!

SOUNDS AWESOME if you can pull it off! :)

I confirmed today that the tranny bolt pattern for the 3.3L is the
same as for a 2.2L.....so "bolt-up" is possible. Make your on guess
about the life of the tranny. The 3.3L weights about 160lbs more.

A complete 3.3L can be purchased for about $1700-$2500 with wiring
harness and factory computer.

I know that Leading Edge Performance tunes the 2.5L to 500hp with
less weight but they are attached to Meola racing trannys. All this
for VERY BIG BUCKS for the rich sand car crowd.
