"CAUTION: LEFT HAND DRIVE"

Is that really such a huge danger to those folks in rand-hand-land?

I wish mine looked like that :(

Dammit, that's a REALLY good deal in USD. Trade for a 2006 Mazda 3 5-door 2.3?

As kitted as it is for offroad it looks as if it maintains all the stock dash components and controls, making it a very safe DD driver.

You have to remove the engine and ship it separately. A car as parts, especially one already sold as a USDM is fine (any car incomplete is parts), but the engine is a problem. The only way to register it as a daily driver is to separate the two. Bringing in the whole car, the NHTSA will force you to show either proof of destruction after 1 year or export papers. Being a somewhat historic car, you may be able to get it in as a display only vehicle, but then you can't drive it. You can check it all out on the NHTSA website. Insurance and registration with an unknown VIN is another issue.

My dad actually told me about a guy who would buy limo's over here, cut them in half and ship them to new zealand or austrailia, and then weld them back together... he said there are no limo's down under and this was the only way he could get it over....

so stupid... i just want it!!!! how hard is this!!! haha

The government is here to make your life difficult. Even Bill Gates couldn't get a 959 into the US for years.

That 959 stuff resulted in a new law for importing small numbers of cars. Maybe it's expired by now, I don't remember exactly.

If you have the wallet, you could get it in. The big "caution left hand drive" sticker will probably help. :)

It only lasts a year or the car needs to be a museum display only. Wallet doesn't matter - Bill Gates has the biggest one there is. IIRC, they wanted to crush his car after the year exemption and he had to ship it out of the country instead. The 959 is now legal because an independent company actually crash tested one and got the emissions to pass. They also modify them, should one find them too slow. I saw a 750hp one at the first Rennsport Reunion at Limerock. But the 959's main reason for not being imported was that Porsche wasn't going to crash test a car they lost money on just to sell it in the US.

In this Subaru's case, importing the chassis sans engine should not be an issue at all, but the engine would be as it's an uncertified engine. So you'd have to import both separately as used car parts and mate them together later. Then you only have to deal with registration and insurance.

I've looked into this with the interest of importing Euro diesels or front clips to put into high-mpg tadpole trikes of my own design. I found it actually wasn't the hassle I imagined as I'd only be importing a partial car. The engine I could get away with emissions-wise as the vehicle would technically be a motorcycle. I've since abandoned the idea due to cost vs. return.
