A/C Removal Tips

Post by Bdub »

Well, I've searched for some threads regarding this, but I am surprised I never stumbled upon one.

My A/C doesn't work, and I really don't care to use it anyway. So, to anyone who has removed their lines and compressor, how should I start going about this? I.E. draining the system and such.
I'm about to start my TMIC install and it appears the rear A/C line is just going to be in my way as well.

You'll have to depressurize the system.

It should be evacuated properly.....however you can also just loosen a bolt on the compressor and the gasses will vent......make sure you don't stand around the area while it's venting, and make sure you do it in a well vented area.

I'm not sure if I did something wrong, but I tried to leave my compressor belt off when I replaced the timing belt because my AC does not work either.

However, when I started it up again, the engine shook something fierce like it was unbalanced. I put the belt back on and it ran just fine.

You shouldn't have had any issues with leaving the a/c belt off.

I misstated my original post, I left the COMPRESSOR off and it ran unbalanced. It runs fine with no compressor BELT.

took all my stuff off in like 2 hours. compresor, condensor and lines. losen the bolts for the hose that goes to the a/c. not completly just enough to let the air out. then when it stops making ANY noice you can take the whole system out. really helps for going up hills. want have to down shift

Hmm....removing the compressor should have no effect in how the engine itself runs.

If you just took the compressor out and pressed the a/c button on the HVAC unit, it's possible it told the ECU to bump the idle, but since there's no additional load from the compressor it made things run incorrectly.

is the compressor the the thing that the other belt is connected to. i am not talking about the condenser or the receiver so we must be talking about the same thing. so i am not sure why what i said is not true

If the compressor clutch is not engaged, it should take near nothing to spin the pulley.

I had recently taken my AC belt off, the engine seemed a bit more peppy. I considered removing the compressor, but it looks to me like it supports the alternator--am I mistaken about that, or do I need some kind of bracket from non-AC cars?
