Constant "whine" from underneath the car?

Post by Fkyx »

I'm assuming it's from underneath the car, but I haven't properly tried to find where it's coming from.

It's a real steady whine... like the sound of someone flat-lining, or someone whistling... very steadily. I can't tell if it changes at all on the throttle, as it's barely audible from inside the car at idle, and even less audible outside of the care... so, naturally, it's near impossible to hear it when the gas is mashed.

I recently turned my boost down from 14lbs to 9lbs, if that makes any difference, although this didn't turn up until about a week afterward.

all your air hoses connected correctly if at all? (cracks...etc)

i had a sound like that when

1. my Y pipe from my intercooler wasn't on all the way and i was loosing air badly.

2. the tiny (IAC?) hose that comes off of the BPV was not connected very well

Does it change pitch with vehicle speed, or engine speed?

Like I said, I can't really tell. The car is so loud that I can only hear it at idle... and barely at that. If any of my friends knew how to drive my car, I'd have them do a drive by so I could listen for it, but none of them can drive a 5MT. :\

I'll do a little more driving later today to see if I can hear a change.

Heh, I'd happily take your SS for a spin -- if I was still in Oregon ;-).

Well today I did a little testing... of sorts.

I first turned the car on and listened while it warmed up. I couldn't hear the whine... and so I felt like an idiot or something. Turned it off and went back inside.

My friends and I later went to see WALL-E, and upon returning, I could hear the whine again. I trailed it all the way to the end of the tail pipe. The sound is VERY obviously coming from somewhere up the exhaust chain.

Unfortunately, it's late, and I can't give the engine any revs without waking up everyone in a half-mile radius, so I've not had a chance to see if the sound changes as the engine speed changes.

Perhaps you guys have more of an idea what's up now?

loose connection in your exhaust?

maybe a perfectly shaped hole in the exhaust?

A little update: No change in the sound when engine speed changes. But the whine does seem to have become a little louder in the last week. I'm running 12lbs of boost again, though, so I wonder if it's related to how much boost I'm running. Still....

One thing I forgot to mention that my buddy noticed, is that it's more of an electrical whine than anything else. It's hardly a "whistle", which is a word I shouldn't have used.

Last time I checked the exhaust, it seems in good shape, but I wasn't able to see too far up the downpipe.

BUMP.

Took a closer look today... it's not coming from the exhaust. It's coming from the rear differential area... Is it possible that my fuel pump is making the sound? I'll see if I can get some video of the whine today.

ahhhhhh maybe

when I was switching interiors i ran around for a while with no rear seats

since you can not hear it at all with seats, i was amazed how audible the fuel pump was without the foam insulation there.

maybe yours is getting louder for some reason or maybe your rear seat isn't latched all the way?

Hmmmm. I'll remove the rear seats and have a drive to see what's up.
