Brand new..Need help with a transmission leak.

Post by dsm_luck »

I just bought a 1993 Legacy Sport about 2 weeks ago. I got it for 800 bucks with a bad clutch. Im only a minor mechanic, and the biggest job I have ever done was to swap a turbo on my old DSM. Needless to say I have no idea about clutches and transmissions. My budget was 2000, including the car, to get it up and running, but after a new clutch, tune up and timing belt/water pump im over that. I had a shop do the clutch and tune up including a transmission fluid change. I only had it a week before this and it wasn't leaking but since getting it back, There looks to be gear oil leaking from the very back of the transmission. I had them put in some expensive gear oil i was going to put in my DSM. I don't know, maybe it was the wrong type for this car. It will make a good 3 inch by 3 inch wet spot on the ground each day. I have been checking the tranny fluid and it is in the middle. Also the car doesn't like to take off in first without some small stuttering, and sometimes even some stuttering on a down shift. I cannot afford, or want to go to a mechanic again, so im looking for some info on possible causes and what I can do to fix it myself.

Thank you for the help!

What kind of fluid did they use?

It's possible that it's a simple leak. Almost every old 5-speed leaks at some point.

Im trying to remember..I bought the fluid like a year ago..It was Redline brand gear oil. So what are my options as far as a fix? Sometimes it leaks a alot and others its not bad. Should I worry about the stutter starting in first also? Thanks

Is the leak out the tail shaft area, or somewhere else?

Yes I think so..Its looks like its coming out of the end of the transmission or near it. I am going to get a better look this weekend and take pics if I can find the leak.

If it's out the tail shaft, you may be able to just replace the seal.

Other possible culprit is the shifter rod.
