sometimes... I wish I where not such an honest man.

So. I'm on a D.O.T. job sandblasting a bridge on the pacific coast. Been an expensive proposition. $230 in gas to relocate the RV. Turns out the jobs does not (as was promised) have a place for my RV and in fact is 10 miles out of town, not "Right in the middle of town" as I was told. so $260 for a RV space for the first 10 days and $800 for an old ford van so I have a way to commute to work. Count in food and misc. essentials and I am nearing $1500 invested in this job.

So. First week I work Wednesday 10 hours, Thursday 10 hours Friday 11 hours, Saturday 10 hours. Total of 41 hours. 5 days Per diam ($65 a day for working outside of normal commute range) 2 hours travel time (1st hour travel time comes out of pocket)

Today I get my paycheck. (numbers off the top of my head so kinda best estimation, not word of god)

30 x $26 per hour Standard Pay
1 x $39 per hour overtime
10 X $262 per hour ....
5 x per diam
2 x $26 Travel pay
----------------------------------------
$3800

less taxes etc. I blink my eyes a few times to make sure I'm not mistaken and take the check back to the foreman, who takes the check and promises to call the company in the morning to clear things up.

So. Here I am. $1500 in the hole and not only do I not have a paycheck to show for it, I take one back that had a gross error in my favor.

Everyone on my crew, INCLUDING the crew lead, tells me I should have kept the check, cashed it, and made the company come to me about the error.

but its just not me.

stuff like that is always "tempting"

the first thought is, it ain't MY fault they scewed up

but of course in the end you always bring it up

it's like you said, it's just who you are

otherwise we would pursue crime instead of honest work. there are lot's of ways to steal shit....

The problem is, eventually they catch up with it, and one week you get a check for $.05...

Go to Denny's. If they forget something on your bill, tell them and you'll get it free and a $10 gift card. 'Cept the last time I did that the lady said "thanks" and just charged me anyways. Stupid ho.

There's usually no reward for doing the right thing (at least not directly). That's what makes it the less popular choice, I guess.
Midnight in a Perfect World on Amazon or order anywhere. The first book in a quartet chronicling the rise of a man from angry criminal to philanthropist. Midnight... is a distopic noirish novel featuring 'Duchess', a modified 1990 Subaru Legacy wagon.

I finally get my paycheck, along with a note from accounting thanking me for my honesty. But they forgot to add Travel pay and my Per-Diam for working out of town LOL.

It never ends!

You know, if you want to go the karma route, something good is coming your way... but if its any consolation, it makes my day better knowing there are still honest people like Dave around...

Gives me hope for the future :)
