Looking for Intercooling and Exhaust

Post by abs526 »

Well...I bought my 1991 Legacy Sport Sedan (US Spec) in October. I
am working on getting my money situation back (poor college kid), but
as soon as I do I'd like to do the first to upgrades on my list which
are: a 3" exhuast (turbo back) and an intercooler. I dont really
have any ideas for either part....I've been looking at the RS
air/water unit, but I dont really know if it will be a good idea for
my application. As far as exhuast goes...well...I cant find any
systems, so I was planning on a custom exhuast. The new WRX is the
same from the cat back, and borla has a nice XR-1 race muffler that
fits our car that I was looking at. Also there is a place in
Australia that sells some great downpipes...

Ok, well...I pretty much use my subaru for my transportation, so I
cant go off the handle with anything that sacrafices reliability. But
I like to do some street racing, some light dirt driving, and some
snow driving. I just like to have lots of fun doing all the above. I
plan on making her a SCCA rally car in about 3 years when I buy a WRX
for my daily driver.

Anyway if anyone has some suggestions for me it would be a big help.
-Andy

The air/water unit is more difficult to install and a bit more
expensive but it certainly works great. You might check Autospeed of
au. for an article they had on intercoolers that explains the pros and
cons of all the intercooling setups.

Andy:

It sounds like the mods you are looking for are the same ones
I've
been researching. The exhaust mod would seem to be well satisfied
should Zak's group buy with Subysports come to pass. As far as
intercoolers, I've discovered that the top-mount air/air cooler
from
an Euro-spec 94-96 Impreza physically fits. Finding one and getting
it shipped over the pond can be a challenge. Aftermarket replacements
for the 94-96 non-US Impreza should also fit and are avalailble from
BPM, APS, etc. See:

http://www.autospeed.com/A_0868/P_1/article.html

It also looks like some mods are needed to plumb it up. You can see
PICS of such an IC at Dave's Website:

For my part, I really want an air/water IC. There are many arguments
for each system, in the end I feel an A/W IC with the ability to cool
down the circulating water is the best solution for me. This gives
the best protection against detonation and is the least affected by
ambient air temp or sitting at idle. Thus, it's as much an engine
protector as a performance enhancer. I live in Denver and have
checked out a system offered by Subysports in Colorado Springs about
75 miles to the South. To date, they have not put one on a Turbo
Legacy, but have sold them to customers who have claimed to get them
in there. I'm having one on mine, prolly next week as they are
gathering the parts for me now. Among other things, it requires the
BOV from a WRX, that's just fine with me as a bigger BOV should
reduce lag. The owner, Brendan, is putting the IC system on himself.
Once it's in, he should have instructions and a parts list for
DIY'ers. This solution IS NOT cheap but looks like the most
elegant
I've yet seen. PIC of Subysports IC here:

http://www.subysports.com/products2259.html

As for snow driving, I've mounted Nokian Hakkapeliitta Q's on the
alloys off a 99 Legacy Outback Wagon. I fear no Glatteis!

Looking for Intercooling and Exhaust

Post by Brian White »

I think the guy from SubySports' name is Braden. I've
spoken to him a few times at the Denver AutoX's and he
seemed to know quite a bit about Suby's. I'm now in
California, and I've been thinking about intercooler
setups as well. It sucks hearing that he's going to
be prototyping one now in CO 'cause I was there for 5
years. Oh well, please keep the list informed as to
how the installation goes and when, if at all, a DIY
instruction how-to is available. Good Luck!
