Installed a 3" exhaust today, so had a look at the VF11 internals. The shaft didn't seem to have any play when I spun it. The white residue normal?
Same question for the O2 sensor, white normal?

Ive never noticed That before, I guess if you live on the East Coast that would be normal. As The salt in the sir would build up, Dosent look like something to worry about

I've seen it on pretty much every turbo Legacy I've worked on (which is a lot)...
No worries...just the stuff getting mega hot...that's all

Both the turbo & O2 sensor look normal.
You can't tell that the O2 sensor is toast by looking at it.

I'd say the car is running lean.
My turbo came off the car with a light brown color & the EGTs were about 1400* on longish pulls (0-110+MPH).
The plugs were the same color as the turbine wheel.

Possibly caused when my car goes into fuel cut/starvation
during cornering ? Or that because the O2 is sluggish? I'm still getting ~23 mpg for 75% highway/25% city driving.
I've since installed a Walbro and haven't had a chance to test the low fuel + cornering issue.

Slap a EGT/Pyrometer gauge on the car & see where your EGTs are.
Your mileage is very good for a SS - ? if the O2 sensor is giving the ECU a bad reading....

Here is a pic of the TD04 I took off my SS.
It is not as brown as I like to see, but was in the correct temp color ballpark.

wow, those both are a lot darker/sootier than mine.
Don't have the cash atm to 'slap in EGT gauge', but I'll put it on the list. When I do get it, can I use the second bung hole in the DP, or should it be read in the UP?

EGT temps really need to be read as close to the cylinder as possible. The stock exhaust manifold has a spot you can drill & tap for the EGT sensor. That would be a good spot for it.

+1 with the above.
I have the pyrometer probes (I have 2 of them - 1 per cyl head on my single port OBS-t) about 3" off the cyl heads.
The only place I could put a probe on the SS's 4-2-1 EL headers was right @ the point were everything merged to 1 on the up-pipe so I just add 100* to the temps on the gauge (everything is heat wrapped & I bet when the car is @ high RPM the gauge is on point but better safe than sorry).

Be careful - the TD04 flows a bit more CFM than the VF11 so thing could get whiter - closer to meltdown!
How do your spark plugs look?
Weird that the stock turbo is soooo white...

haven't checked the spark plugs in about 6 months, when i last changed them, but the old ones i pulled out were the proper brownish color.
my emissions were bad though, even after the new 02 sensor, i had to run through the test 3 times and the 3rd time i jacked up the tire pressure and took the air filter out
