my subaru stealership rant
well my shifter is really loose when its in gear, it moves like 5inched to the left and right, so i read up on how i should replace the bushings and i figured id replace the center spring as well.
i go to my local stealership and ask the parts guy if they sell a shifter bushing kit, and hes tells me he had no idea they made kits, so i kindly explained..ok so maybe its not a kit but do you have shifter bushings for a 92 legacy SS...the counter guy asks what the SS model was etc. and he starts looking on his computer and goes we def dont have it in stock that cars to old, and i dont see it on my computer. he then tells me " i dont know what to tell you the computer shows nothing, your car is way to old."
this is the last time i go to my local stealership, ive always had a problem from their parts department. even when i tried to get brake pads they always sold me the ones that never fit my wrx, even with the VIN i gave them.
end rant.

My dealership is the same way. Get the parts manual and look it up yourself. I bring my dealership a part number and don't ask them questions. If you want it done right, do it yourself.
Also, watch what you get from the dealer - that stuff is expensive! If you want shift bushings, buy a prothane or energy sus. bushing and a kartboy rear shift bushing. The ones for a WRX fit.

Not all the bushings will fit.
There is a front and rear shifter stay bushing. These are interchangable from the WRX.
The actual shifter joint & bushings in the joint are not the same.
The joint can be swapped to the newer style if you swap out the entire shifter linkage. There are several threads that I believe talk about this.

What Josh said, only the two bushings I referenced are the same. I suggest just doing those two and the spring. That will make a huge difference.Legacy777 wrote:Not all the bushings will fit.

Those are not going to fix your problem.
Damn whoever first called those things bushings to hell. They're not bushings. They're mounts.
What you ordered are mounts. They will firm up the feel of your shifter, provided the small bushings in your shifter are in good shape. If they're not, then you're gonna have a floppy shifter no matter what.
They're pretty small, about the diameter of a penny, and there are six total in your shifter. Four are relatively easy to replace. Two (the ones that usually go bad first) are a major pain in the ass, especially if your car is AWD.
If you want, PM me, and I'll hook you up.

There may be some play left over from the remaining worn bushings in the shifter joint, but if his shifter would move several inches before, that rear bushing and the spring will help tremendously.DerFahrer wrote:Those are not going to fix your problem.
I agree with you that to fix the whole problem and eliminate any play, you should replace all the bushings. But this isn't a bad start.

Trust me. I've been through this enough times to know. The mounts just firm up the feel slightly, for a more performance feel. If you have a shifter that is flopping around, the mounts are not the problem.
The small bushings are subject to more wear and tear than the mounts will ever see, because they receive the direct force of shifting the gears. They can be extremely worn, to the point that they are gone completely. That's exactly what happened to my Legacy the first time. The two front bushings, the hard ones to get to, were completely and totally gone.
