I'm not saying the turbo itself is small. Its just that a friend of mine was severly dissapointed with his results using a .63 housing on a GT3076R.

He was expecting around 350whp with it. He's using a built 257 with 2.5 SOCH heads. He was going to rev to 7k.


Part of it may be his NA manifold to funny up-pipe, but I can say for sure that with the bigger motor, the small hotside is definitely a factor. It just falls on its face up top.

I bought my 2871R with the largest hotside I could get with it, a .86. Granted A/R is relative to the wheel size, and my exhaust wheel is 2.7mm smaller than a 3071R, and 4.x mm smaller than a 3076R. I don't regret it at all though. This turbo wails until redline, spools fine, and is plenty for me.

I don't think he is doubting what you are capable of. He may be questioning what you think is involved in getting there though.



Is this in a Legacy? If so it is going to take A LOT of goods to get there. Just having a turbo capable of flowing that much air and a shortblock up to the task does not mean you'll get 450hp out of it.


What engine management are you going to use? I'll tell you right now, no piggyback will give you the control over a setup like that necessary to keep it together. My Link Plus G2 wasn't cheap. Either was the data acquisition needed to tune it.


What about fuel? I was able to talk Deatchwerks into making me some 900cc SR20 injectors. They don't suck fuel from the tank by themselves though. You'll be near the limits of a Walbro, and two of them is probably a good idea. The stock lines, series arrangement, and regulator are worthless to you at that point. The regulator to have is the Areomotive A1000. The line and fittings to make it work will cost more than the regulator itself. Outfront motorsports makes nice adapters for our rails to run some -6 to them.


Is this turbo internally gated? If not, a 44mm will be in order. I hope you can build your own pipe set, because people get insane money for a quality setup, custom or not.


Obviously a good clutch will be needed. Mine was $1200. If you want to keep tossing in 5 speed after 5 speed go ahead. Or you can wait until you have something that can handle said abuse.



I hope to god that you'll have nice suspension and brakes to keep things under wraps. I don't mean WRX brakes either.



If you already have the 20G heads, by all means use them. Just don't expect to do well up high in the rev range. Hydraulic lash adjusters struggle to maintain valve lift up top. EJ25D heads, with maybe a conversion to shim-under or shimless buckets are a great option and can be had for cheap. They also have the biggest factory ports.








What I'm trying to get at here, is from my experience and the experience of several friends of mine, is take whatever you think your build is going to cost, and double it. That will get you in the ballpark. Seriously. Don't think that you'll get away with spending under $20k. I didn't.

It's one of those "maybe yes, maybe no" kind of deals. With 565cc injectors, you won't even come close to using that turbo, so the stock arrangement probably won't be that huge of an issue. Beyond that and the series arrangement will be an issue. Going to a parallel arrangement enables much more flow can keep you from burning down one cylinder. In the end it cost me about $300 using a bad ass regulator and the factory rails. The Outfront Motorsports adapters open up tons of possibilities.




It looks like you have a pretty good start on theparts game. If you can get 5mt's for cheap, more power to ya. I waited untill I had a 6 speed, but thats just me. An intercooler that means business needs to be on that list.



A good chunk of my pricetag was the 8k miles 6mt, and the Link Plus, which is a good chunk over the standard Link. You'll need the MAP sensor with the higher range if you want to go over 21.5 psi. They don't give those damn things away.


But yeah, it looks like you have a solid start. What got me was the tons of money I spent on random little shit that adds up in a big hurry. Coolant hose, wire, connecotrs, fittings, sealants, and other random things that end up killing you in the end that you never expected to add up like they do.

the front mount i have on the car is off a first gen turbo talon kit. its rated at 700hp. when i was running my 16g at 15psi the core of the intercooler didnt even get warm. only the inlet plenum witch is awesome.


ill look in to the fuel regulator, it was defiantly an area that i didnt even think of, thanks dude.


ya the link plus is nice, i just didnt want to spend the extra grand on some add ons. ill end up buying a launch controller sooner or later.

flat foot shifting has to be awesome for drag racing.

as for the MAP sensor, ill have to buy another one later cause i only got the 1.5bar. at the time i was just planing on using a stock 16g turbo at 20psi so i didnt jump for the high bar MAP sensor.

i can get the 5mt's easy around here. lots of n/a legacy's in the junkyards. $150per tranny, or $125 with core.
