Nut came loose inside the unibody.

Post by biggreen96 »

I'm installing the trans, tightening a transmission crossmember bolt when the nut it threads into comes loose from it's welds. Son of a B.

I have never run into this, so anybody who has dealt or has a trick please chime in. At this point I plan to cut into the "bracket" enough to get a wrench in and get the job done.

OR somebody in the northwest sell me a impreza/legacy wagon shell for cheap.

Hopefully this isn't going to weaken the area. Well anyway it's done. Image

I'd weld a patch on it if possible. If you're gonna leave it open, use a rat-tail file to round off the corners... sharp angles like that lead to cracks, and that is a front suspension mount point, too.
Spray some paint into it for rust prevention, maybe blow some expanding foam into it to close it up.

Well whatever I do needs to just be semi permanent so I can get the transmission out again.

I had the same thing happen to me in that spot. I cut an opening to get the nut back off the bolt. I got a new hardened metric nut, tightened it down, then welded the nut to the sheet metal. Then I welded the hole back shut.

Welding on galvanized sheet metal is fun!
