sadly im going back to awd soon :( breaking my diff twice and three axles is getting super old (although i think the axles are because im too low and they are on a pretty sharp angle facing upwards)

ya i think a r180 would hold up but i prefer running a welded diff over an LSD (but im sure the sti lsd is fairly good) but i would also have to change diff, axles, hubs, brakes in the rear to make it all work so thats a big no go haha

So you are running a welded rear diff?

Would that alone make you blow them? Because wouldnt that make it act like a solid rear axle??

+1 Nice PICs!

You should be able to hybird the outer CV joint of a R180 so that is fits into the stock R160 splined hub OR do the opposite & hybird the inner joint of a stock axle so that it will mate with a R180 rear.

93forestpearl was/is planning on doing something like that on his car.

thought about doing something like that but then i am still using some r160 parts which i have found not to hold up haha.
also right now i can walk into an auto parts store and get an axle from a legacy, impreza, forester, baja. unlike the r180 which is sti only and costs a lot more

Negatory. The spline counts on the axle shafts are different between the R160 and R180 rear diffs. DriveShaftShop makes R180 conversion axles, but they are $1200.

All you can really do is keep a few spare axles on hand. They are easy enough to swap out with a few hand tools and a few minutes of labor.

I was told that I could make a hybrid axle using the outer section of a normal axle and using everything inward of an R180 axle from the outer CV. I was told this by someone who has had them both apart before.


If it comes down to it I can re-drill SVX backing plates to run smaller brakes and re-drilled SVX rotors. I know for a fact this is possible as a friend of mine has done it.


I don't know if my wheels will accommodate STi rear brakes. If I went to that, I wouldn't be able to have any kind of snowy shennanigans with the car, unless I spent a grip on new snow tires when I already have a set that has a couple winters left in them.

I'm pretty sure you can't. Driveshaftshop made those axles for us for a reason. I can get spline count information one day this week.

I'm talking about the ball-and-cage of the outer CV joint. Unless I'm totally misunderstanding of how they are put together.

So you use the R180 guts (cage and bearings), the R160 cup, and bolt it all together?

That I have never tried. I played with a front axle, but it didn't work. I never really tried or cared about the rear. It may work fine.

its not the axle ive been breaking. its all of the guts inside the inner joints

not sure if its because i was too low (my axles pointed upwards a lot) or because of being rwd (probably both)

That's the idea. A Subaru Mechanic/car builder/modifier/engine builder, who has been in this game about twice as long as any of us on here, said I should be able to do it. I won't know for sure until I get both axles apart in front of me though.

I'd think that would be better documented if it were easily doable. That said, in all of the monster cars we've built we tend to err on the side of caution. Either go money on the 6MT swap AND use strong axles, or do a built 5MT and strong axles.

In the end which is cheaper/more cost effective?

Built 5mt strong axles... or 6mt swap?

Depends on what you want. STi axles are marginally stronger than WRX axles, so looking at it from that point of view is faulty.

A built 5MT is going to be MUCH better for drag racing and anytime you want longer gear ratios. The 6MT is good if you REALLY like to shift (and into 5th down the 1/4 mile...)

Funny how folks say things are impossible without ever trying to do them before....

I actually sold a R180 Rear Diff / axles & 2 pot set-up off a STi "R" a few weeks back. The whole shaft is thicker not just the spline which is also a bigger diameter too - WHICH is why you'd use the outer R160 spline section together with the rest of the R180 axle.

Folks do what Dan described above ALL THE TIME on other cars (VW, Hondas) & they don't spend $1200 to get it done, someone will have to TRY it on a Subaru to see if it will work......
The idea should be tried before it is dismissed as "impossible".

So a 6mt is closer ratio... so that would be better for like rally stuff?
