ABS problem

Post by Rochus »

Hello! I have problems with my ABS system on my Subaru Legacy 2.2 1991. The problem is that the ABS starts working (you can hear it and feel in on the beake pedal) when it's not necessary - at light braking and even when the car stands still and you just hold the brake. After a while the ABS light comes on and the system is deactivated. But sometimes the system works perfect. The LED blinks 7 times, so it should be on rear right ABS sensor. I have seen some repair/check guides somewhere online but I can't find them now :? I just want to check all the sensors and the unit with the voltmeter.

Is this problem known to anyone, do you have some useful service manuals?

Thanks ;-)

I have posted some manuals in the stuff you need to know forum, however I don't have any of the brake stuff posted I believe.

What you could try doing is swapping the wheel sensor out for another wheel (assuming they are the same), and see if the code # indicates a different wheel. If so, just replace that bad wheel sensor.

Where can I find that switch (in the fuse/relay box?) and how can I check it?

If there is air in the brake system I think that causes the abs to trip when you hit the brake pedal. I am currently having that problem. You can also try taking out the relays and hitting them, as well as spraying w/e lube or contact cleaner in the tiny hole. That worked for me. I still get my abs coming on when it should not, but it seems like it is a air in the brake issue, because after I run the abs like it should normally, don't have the problem, but sometimes after the abs kicks in on ice, it will start giving me the abs light all the time. Like I said still believe it has something to do with air being in the brake system if the pump is coming on ONLY when you hit the brakes. If it is always on whether you hit hte brakes or not, I would assume the relay is sticking.

thx for the quick reply i dont have any light on with the abs system i feel it's worst with the abs i would have do a lot better by pressing and depressing the brake pedals my brake distance is so bad i wonder if the system work correctly i cant go under the car too much snow and i have no room to work on the car
for the air in the system the mechanics bleed the system so i presume its ok but i have it check when the proper time come when i fix my gas tank. i also ask him to lub those relay

just hope nothing bad happen
