Yeah, maybe some 0W Mobil 1 will get in there. Will also find ANY leak you might not know you have. The lifters is so easy a job, there's no reason not to do it yourself. You can even go to a junk yard and pull an engine's worth of lifters if you want. I guarantee you'll have plenty of good extras.

Pickup a set of used heads or lifters for cheap and pull the lifters. This seriously should not take more then 2 hours worth of labor.

Post in the community forum on here, and I'd suggest the meet & greet forum on www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum and ask if anyone has a recommendation for a mechanic in the spokane area.

Mattheww044, I'm going to try to say this very kindly but I'm going to be very direct, okay? You keep asking for advice. The guys who have been posting in this thread have been giving you all the advice you need. Legacy777 and evolutionmovement have both taken apart their Subaru engines and rebuilt them. They know what they are talking about. These guys know more than many Subaru dealers and mechanics. So, if your hesitancy is because you don't know which advice is correct, here it is: the mechanics you talked to are correct about the prices that you will be charged. But the advice given by those who posted is correct in what needs to be done to your car.

So, if you want good advice, read this thread carefully and then follow through on what's been posted.

The lifters making a little ticking noise is not a big deal. If they were clattering really loudly then that may be another story. But from what you have posted, it doesn't seem to be a major problem. So, the guys who have posted in this thread are giving you good advice.

If you keep asking for advice on the same issue, the guys on this board are not going to want to help you anymore. If you need more detailed help, I think the guys would be willing to help provided you show that you are actually taking action and actually attempting to fix the problem.

We all want you to enjoy driving and fixing your Legacy. But it will be up to you if you want to start learning to fix it starting with this project or another one.

If you feel this project is too much for you, then you need to find a GOOD Legacy mechanic who will first see if the lifters are bad or if they just need bleeding. If the project is too much for you, just tell us and we won't hold it against you.

Best wishes to you for a successful outcome with your ticking lifters! :D

Doing anything sort of inside an engine can be intimidating to someone who hasn't done it, but if you don't have money to throw away, it's worth the try. There's little you can screw up here and little you need for tools. IIRC, a socket with a 10 and 12mm and a short extension is probably all you need, but there might have been a 14 in there somewhere. Do one head at a time so you can refer to the other if you need to (you shouldn't). The only thing to know is the torque spec on the bolts for the rocker arm cradle. Which I can get from the factory service manual for you (so you need a torque wrench - a cheap bar one will suffice - or a well-calibrated hand which it sounds like you don't have). The only sort-of trick is to barely tighten the valve cover bolts when you're done to prevent them from leaking as it goes against what you'd think would be sufficiently tight.

Please try and find a good shop in your area. Or if you decide to do the work yourself, you need to take the lifters out and check them before you go and order more. I highly doubt they're all bad, and who knows if the issue is just air.

Air or sludge worked itself out of the lifters so the oil can now do what it's supposed to do.
