USDM vs. JDM/Aussie Spec

Post by Aussie_in_mo »

OK, this may have been covered, I did a search but might have used the wrong search string.
Anyway, from a moderately reputable source (OK, it was Wikipedia... not so reputable) I see reference to the 'EJ22E'which is Aussie spec'd at 135hp, the US engine from '94 was 101hp from the factory. It's my understanding, from a good friend who's a Subie tech, that the early EJ22's were limited in their HP output by Engine Control. That seems to make sense, that they probably put a different ECU into the JDM vehicles vs the US market. I guess my question to the guru's whether or not this is the case and if so I don't see any reason why the US spec '94 EJ22 can't turn out 135hp in stock form. Am I correct in this?

And I think that figure is a conservative estimate as well since my wagon could at least match the acceleration of several other cars of similar weight with 150 or a little more rated horsepower.

Yeah, I have an EJ22E in my '96 Outback and it pulls pretty strong, I've actually had non-subie friends in the car that were like" wow, this things pretty fast" it made me laugh cause to me it's snail slow, especially after what Subarina could do.

I believe the official weight on the raised roof wagon is listed as "pig heavy"... Granted, the SVX is muuuuuuch heavier though.
