Motor's still got 167K on it... for that kind of wood I'd expect at least a rebuilt powerplant with everything else. New drivetrain and an immaculate original paint body would be worth $7.5K. His mistake was having someone else do the work, and expecting to recoup a lot of that cost. Ain't happening.

The stealership really does rip you off good. I called them about replacing all my wheel bearings and they quoted me around $1600. That's insane. I called up les schwab and they wanted $700. I took a trip to pick a part and found a good wagon and pulled 3 hubs assemblies off it(3 out of 4 hubs were bad). Paid $20 or $25 each and then ended up having to replace one again because one of the ones I got was bad and I didn't bring it back in time to swap it with a different one.

So in the end I got away with $100 VS $1600 from the stealership.

That's why I don't let anyone do work on my car. I just won't pay them to do it. Don't trust them. Don't want to let them rip me off like that. Can't afford it either.

I bet that 5pd cost him $2500-3000 by itself. If you read it carefully it sounds like he had them source a New Old Stock turbo 5spd for the conversion. That and it's installation is probably at least a $4000k if not more of that $10k number.

I don't know if he'll get his number for that car, but for the right buyer he may get close. But it's all about waiting for the right buyer, which clearly is not any of the people talking trash about what appears to be a very nice car.

We were talking trash about the owner who seems to think that he will get OUT of the car the money he put INTO it.

That never happens. And he spent way too much for his upgrades.

How do you really know what his intentions are? Maybe he priced the car high on purpose to keep away all but the most seriously interested actual potential buyers. I've seen it before where a seller put a car a good 15% or more above market to keep the fluff away. Maybe he'd sell this car for $6000 to the right buyer, but that buyer is going to have to show up and proove that he's the right guy.

I did just that when I sold my RS. I put the car at $9500 when similar mileage and condition cars were going for $8000. I got one call on the car. That guy wanted my car. I sold it to him for $8000. It's not always about the money and making assumptions about people doesn't really accomplish much.

Furthermore, maybe the guy's a member here. Maybe he didn't post the car here at all because he knows that you guys are a bunch of cheapskate trash talking assholes and is sitting watching you guys be dickheads to one of our own who is assumed not to be one of us because his car is on Craigslist. Forums make it really easy to run off at the mouth and be rude and disrespectful to people we would never insult in person in everyday life. You guys can say what you want about this guy and his car. Personally, I try to treat people online just like I would treat them in person. That includes talking shit about someone, especially someone I don't even know.

ps. I really do respect what this guy has done with this car. The guy who bought my '91 called me recently to tell me that he's doing a bare metal respray on it. People here call themselves enthusiasts, but the true enthusiasts are the one who in the future are going to be spending money on truly restoring these cars. These cars will very possibly become collectable in the coming future. Give it another 5-10 years and they may start to appreciate. I've seen it happen with something as overproduced as the Porsche 914. 2 years ago when I bought my '73 car it was worth maybe $2500. I now have one that is worth $12k. 2 years ago nothing but a true 914-6 was worth that kind of money. Now nice type IV 2.0l 914's are worth that money on a pretty regular basis.

i think the car is sick and clean. (nicer then mine) but no matter what money you put in your car you will never get it out it doesnt matter how much.

if someone tried to sell me that in person i would ask them what kind of drug they do cause i want some too.

FWIW, who, in their right mind, is going to show up w/ that kind of cash in hand for a 15'ish year old Subaru wagon? Even if it is a turbo, and a 5 speed.
