TurboXS Dtec (no timing adjustment though), Perfect Power 6 (my next route), Link ECU, and a few other options which are not dependant on having an OBDII computer.

The MAF Translator Pro works pretty well. Nice fuel tracking and closed loop boost control. Gets rid of the MAF sensor too.

yes, i thought switching to OBD2 would be nice, seems like he doesn't want to..

for now.. could he just get an afr gauge(one that actually reads the AFR's, and a MBC and see how close we could get to 10.3 afr?

i don't want to go leaner than that since the motor has 218K on it lol..

btw.. this is my friends car.. not mine, i drive a 2003 wrx that is protuned with cobb lol

10.3 is awfully rich. I tune for 11.1-11.5. Have not melted down making about 300whp and 320+ lb-ft.

I actually start to get over-rich missfires at around 10.6-10.7:1. If you like your ignition coils, you don't let that happen.

we are in california.. 91 octane crappy gas, its dangerous for us to go that lean on pump gas...

10.3 is the richest my wrx is tuned for.. at full boost its at 10.6...

the gas here sucks so we have to tune safe

ya know? probably not since yall get nice gas..

I'll expand on it a bit. I can only get 92 half the time. When I am in Mankato, I can only get 91. I run a much larger turbo at 8+psi more than you. Low to mid 11's (AFR wise) is where I'm at, with up to 22° advance under load, no excessively high EGT's, no knock, runs fine when 95° outside, and have been doing so for almost two years.

Having to run almost a point richer down seems rather fishy.

nah, most tuners here
(subie tuners lol) will tune at about 10.3-10.7... any leaner on a pump gas only car is sketchy.. i know its hard to believe but that how crappy gas here is...

Your friend will pretty much need a piggyback at a minimum to get the job done. eManage, Perfect Power, etc etc will work. That or install a standalone.

On the cheap, I've tuned a few MegaSquirts (standalone) now and it's too bad that there's not much (if any) support for Subarus. They have a low cost to get started and can be built up to do most anything you want. Actually the last one I did on a turbo'd rock crawler Toyota truck, www.DIYAutotune.com said that they also have an early model Subaru running on a MS so who knows. I'm not certain about the crank trigger set up though so I can't say if it's the same as the early 90's Legacy.

A stand-alone ECU can also be wired in parellel with the factory computer too. That's always an option to make things easier as well. Ebay can be a good place to find used ones that have either been replaced or from folks that had a failed project.

As far as tuning to 10.3:1 (a blanket AFR LOL), that's WAY too rich! Forget the 91 vs 93 thing. Any shop tuning like that is being lazy. Dyno tuning will help you realize this quickly.
