Well they've got it forcasted to hit Houston or damn near it. Everyone's freaking out.....not as bad as Rita, but it's funny.

Wind is about the only thing I'll worry about, and losing power. It should be through by Saturday evening. We're supposed to start seeing tropical storm winds tomorrow around 1pm, and it's supposed to make landfall around 1am tomorrow night/morning.

I made sure to stock up on beer and shochu So I should be good

yikes........IKE sounds to be very large. The surge is going to be much larger than what is typical for that area, the enormous sq mileage coverage of the storm is much larger than typical.....so more of a surge....

Earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, volcanoes... no thank you, I'll just stick to my nice 'safe' mountains. At least I have a shot at shooting a bear or cougar before it gets me.

Thanks guys. Yeah storm surge is the big issue due to the size of the storm. So Galveston, free port and other coastal communities have had mandatory evacuations. They are already seeing storm surge and flooding issues and the storm is almost 200 miles away still. They just showed a shot of snakes, rats and what not looking for higher ground where a marshy area has been flooded.

Dan, most of the Houston area is around sea level, and yes there's a reasonable amount of people that live along the coast and ship channel.

Because the storm is so wide winds aren't as intense, and that's really the only concern for my area.

I did however have a small quest for ice this morning, but eventually found it.

It's interesting about the different disasters. I've been through a small earthquake, ice/snow storms, minor hurricane, and now this.....I'm not sure which I'd prefer. Each has their up's and down's I guess.

So what you are saying is that a LOT of stuff could be flooded and many many homes get trashed by flooding. Yikes.

I hope you, or at least your car, lol, is on higher ground.

I don't know if you have a generator or not (and if you don't, you probably won't find one in your area now), but I'd say they're the #1 tool for surviving a power outage from a storm... for your refrigerator above all else.

I had friends camp out at my house for one of the storms in 2004, and we found plenty of ways to keep ourselves entertained without power. Cards, reading by candlelight, beer . And we managed with cold showers.

But I was growing quite concerned about the food in the fridge. Thus I made sure I had one for this season.

Post up when you get the power back on so we know you're alright.

Thanks for all the concern!

Let me say that is one experience I don't EVAR want to go through again. I'm sure some of the guys in Florida have rode out a hurricane, and may have similar experiences, but it is quite nerve racking to say the least.

The winds picked up Friday, storm surge in the Galveston area was already a problem by mid-day on Friday. Ike made landfall around 1am Saturday morning (friday night). I lost power at 1:49am, according to the UPS logs. My house is on the west side of Houston, about 10 miles west of down town. The eye passed just east of downtown. My place got eye-wall strength winds pretty much all the time.

The winds were out of the North. The first half of the storm was crazy insane winds. I swear the roof was going to blow off. I could see shingles being torn off the roof and flying into the air. The second half of the storm it just rained and rained! The flashing had blown off and water was running back into the soffet and leaking through the front window. I got out of bed around 5am to do a towel brigad to try and keep the carpet from getting further soaked. I didn't sleep at all that night.

Overall damage to my place, I lost quite a bit of shingles on the north side of the roof. The roof needed to be replaced. Asphalt shingles were put down on top of cedar shack shingles. I didn't see any leaks in the attic when I went up there, however it probably needs to be looked at more closely.

Like I said, I had water come in the front window. It appears to be drying ok, however carpet may need to be replaced. The legacy was in the garage and ok. The impreza was outside and got some scratches on the hood from falling shingles, and a scratch on the passenger side mirror from some flashing that came down. Overall pretty minor damages.

My power came back on around 5am, so I was one of the lucky people with power. I attribute that to the fact there is a main substation a block or two away. There were power outages at one of the city's main pumping stations, so water pressure was very low. However I still had water compared to some that didn't have any water. My cable is out. My landlords DSL is working, so I moved my wireless router over there to get internet. I'm actually back at work right now. I'm probably going to leave soon, there's nothing for me to do.

Downtown got pretty heavily hit, and there's a lot of debris and downed trees.

Glad to hear from you again Josh. It's pretty amazing what wind and rain can do when it's relentless and that strong. I'd imagine that if you have good air to the window and trim work it will be okay. I'd recommend putting several box fans blowing across the carpet and it's probably still saveable. If you can get enough air moving over it it'll dry it out and just being rain water you didn't get the icky/contaminated water that others get when it floods.

Again, glad to hear you made it through it and the cars came out in good shape.
