Hi again.
This time its a trans problem.90 Legacy,AWD,auto, and when I drive it
normally in traffic it seems to shift ok.If you put your foot into it
a little harder,as it shifts it flares up.If you take your foot off
the gas and back on, it goes into gear and drives fine.Is there a
kickdown linkage or cable that could be hanging up.What about a band
adjustment or some other cheap fix.(Please! I really dont want to have
to pull the tranny out)Has anybody rebuilt their own auto trans.
As is still runs and drives I would think seals and clutch plates
would do it.
One last thing.Does this type of Awd always allow the front wheels to
initially spin in gravel before the back engages?
I appreciate the help

Mine sorta does that....maybe not as bad as yours....it's just the nature of these trannies as they wear...they are not too hot....there is a band adjustment...it tells how to in the chiltons manual. I can post tomorrow the instructions if you would like.....
The front has 90% transfer split.....10% rear under normal....the front will probably spin a little bit...if the rear does not eventually kick in....then something could be wrong.

Josh.
The chiltons instructions would be great.
My rear axle does kick in, just its not the same type of action as my
323gtx.Wasnt sure if that was correct.Ive seen talk of no trans
filter on the 90.I think I have one that looks like a fuel filter on
the LF frame rail, near the rad.Would that be it?

Paul,
Check out my site if you haven't. Alot of good info for the early gen legacies. ECU codes, TCU codes, and how to pull them, info about that external tranny filter, and picture of it, as well as some other stuff too. www.surrealmirage.com/subaru/subaru.html
I'll post the chilton's instructions when I get home this afternoon. I'm in the process of gathering parts...well a whole car...for my tranny swap project. I really don't care how the auto shifts....and to get it better I would need a rebuild.....so I'm looking for a FWD 5spd legacy to buy for cheap and then cannibalize everything I need for the tranny swap.

Here's the procedure in the Chilton's book for adjusting the brake band
>>>>>>>>>>>
This adjustment can be performed on the outside of the transmission.
1. Park the car on a level surface or support it on jackstands, engine off.
2. Locate the adjusting screw above the pan on the left side of the transmission.
3. Loosen the locknut.
4. On 1985 and later models, torque the adjusting screw to 18 ft lbs (25 Nm), then turn it back exactly 3/4 turn.
5. Tighten the lock nut.
Following the above procedure will adjust the transmission brake band to the factory specified setting. However, if any of the following conditions are detected the adjusting screw can be moved 1/4 turn in either direction:
Turn 1/4 turn clockwise if the transmission:
jolts when shifting from 1st to 2nd
engine speed abruptly rises from 2nd to 3rd
shift delays in kickdown from 3rd to 2nd.
Turn 1/4 turn counterclockwise if:
car slips from 1st to 2nd
there is a braking action at shift from 2nd to 3rd
Sorry about takin so long to post.

Thanks for the info.I,ll give it a try.I dont really
want to pull the tranny out and rebuild it.
If it doesnt work, maybe I,ll have a car for sale.
