help.. strange things after clutch replacement!

Post by kid420 »

I recently took my 92 L wagon 5 speed manual to a local subaru shop to have the transmission serviced. They ended up putting in a new clutch kit, surfaced the flywheel, and adjusted the cables. After I got the car out of the shop I noticed right away when I would ease out the clutch in 1st gear from a dead stop it would make the whole engine/transmission/drivetrain stutter and vibrate horribly. After I got going in gear everything feels fine and its very smooth, shifting isnt a problem. When I use the engine to compression break I get the exact same symptoms, the transmission and drivetrain stutter and shake uncontrollably untill the clutch is fully disengaged. I checked my tranny fluid which seemed high, it was above the full mark, not sure if this was because the tranny was warm and still settling. I also disengaged the hill holder cable from the clutch lever on the transmission hoping it might have been poorly adjusted. That seemed to help smooth things out a bit but the symptoms still persist. Has this happened to anyone before? Im really not sure what to think. Any help would be great. Oh and I told the mechanic about this, and he told me just to drive it a bit longer.. but its not going away..

well easing out of the clutch to take off in first gear and it shutters would most likely be from the fact that the new clutch is very "grabby". I would assume they just put in an OEM replacement? Clutches do require some break in time.

I know on the civic I had when I put a new Exedy "stage 1" clutch in it (cheaper than autozone) it was pretty grabby for a few hundred miles

make shure they bolted down the "dog bone". that thing will make for some funny drive ability problems.

ive done dozens of clutchs at work with factory kits, they shouldent shudder on take off.

+1 for the dogbone. Maybe see if they didn't mess with the transmission mount as well.

Ill check the dogbone, im assuming that is the brace that bolts onto the tranny then onto the car? It seems the problem might be getting a bit smoother; im trying to keep the RPM's a bit higher when im letting the clutch out, which makes an improvement on the shuddering. Anyways I'm gonna swing by the shop on monday and have the mechanic take a gander at it. Thanks for the input fellas!
