94 GT Wagon (been in the shadows long enough)

Post by 94.GT.Wagon »

Hey everybody. I've been visiting this site since I bought my Legacy like a year ago and finally decided to show myself. Didn't know much about the 1st gen Legacy until I came across a wrecked but otherwise clean 94 GT Wagon on craigslist. Picked it up for $300 not really knowing how rare it was, and as I began to bring her back to life I became quite a fan and also realized what I had.

Collision repair is my job, so that helps. Thanks for the compliments, I'm proud of her.

No extra cash right now but down the road I'll be looking to get a turbo hood and grille, so if anyone near southwest Michigan has either of them they'd like to sell at a later time, holler.

something is very strange with that front bumper. -looks like the rub strip is gone or blended, even in the first pic.

The rub strip is there in the before pics. As the bumper was torn right through that area and perhaps not even practical to repair, I thought I'd experiment with eliminating that feature. In my opinion it's the most dated part of the exterior and I like it better with it gone. I eliminated the recess where the front license plate would go as well. I've thought about smoothing out the side moldings as well. We'll see. The lower grille in the bumper was also screwed so I cut it out, figured the worst that could happen is it would look bad and I'd just get a new bumper but I kind of like the changes.

What did you use to eliminate the front black molding?

To fill in the low parts of the rub strip and license plate recess I used a 2-part urethane repair material that is normally used just for repairing tears in bumber covers and other semi-flexible plastic parts but worked great for my purposes. Then on top of that I used a flexible body filler from SEM that is also made for use on bumper covers. It took a fair amount of time but it was kind of fun to make it my own.

Is there a general availability to these products or are the only available to body shops?

They're available to all. Local auto body supply and paint stores should have the stuff and sell to the public or you can get it online. The 2-part repair material requires a special gun to get it out of the tube, and the flexible body filler is like regular body filler in that you mix it with a hardener to use it.

2-part repair material:

Didn't see the body filler on the website listed above, but it's made by a company called SEM. Also, a spray on adhesion promoter is required whenever putting a product on raw plastic. The stuff I use is from 3M and comes in an aerosol can.

I've seen BullDog sold locally as an adhesion promoter. How expensive is the gun required to push out the two parts? Looks mainly like a typical two part epoxy container though.

Awesome custom bodywork. I love when people smooth out little things like that. I wish I could shave the rub strip moldings on my RS but thats pretty expensive to do. I'd also like to shave my A-pillar antenna hole but I was quoted at $350 for that, not too expensive but not worth it to me right now. Wish I could do it myself like you can.

I think the guns start at like $35 and go up from there. Sometimes the supply store will let you borrow a gun from them if you buy the product there.

NICE! Is that the Agean Blue Metallic? I love how clean the car is now, and killer job on the rescue!

If I knew how to paint, I'd do my cars right up.. :P Though, I'm good at sculpting, so my fiberglass scoop is coming along well.
