Going for a new exhaust.
I was told by someone(no to sure on their knowledge) that it can be
better to have 1 large muffler instead of an average size muffler and
a smaller resonator down the line. Is this true? Or does it just
change the sound from a low growl to bark.
Anyone had any good or bad experiences with using 1 muffler or 2 for
that matter?
cheers

New Exhaust - whats your thoughts

New Exhaust - whats your thoughts
The middle pipe section you're referring to is called the resonator. This helps cancel out some of the exhaust sound. Also a bigger muffler doesn't necessarily mean it will cut out more sound. Ultimately it depends on what you want. Yes the mid pipe resonator will make it quieter....but if you still put a loud muffler on, it will be loud.....just not as loud. If you leave the resonator off, and put in a quieter muffler, I think overall it would be a more subdued sound, until you stomp on it. Don't quote me on that, I haven't played with my exhaust setup yet.
I'm sure others on the list can give you some info as well.
If it were me, I'd probably do away with the resonator and get a semi-quiet/loud muffler.

New Exhaust - whats your thoughts
I have a 2.5" exhaust from my resonator back, to a nice Dynomax
straight-through muffler and a magnaflow tip to get it past the
bumper.
The sound is pure Subaru Boxer, especially on startup and idle. Low,
burbling and sounding much larger than 2.2L. Even on the Wagon it's
not that loud inside, and at 90MPH it's audible, but hardly
intrusive. I'd highly recommend some kind of resonator for just
about any car, not only to keep the sound from getting to you, but to
keep "the law" from noticing.
I did notice a tangible difference in power, especially when the
turbo kicks in and all the way to redline. It's similar to when i
added the DIS-2. Everything is now complimentary, it's nice.

New Exhaust - whats your thoughts
Stu:
I took off my muffler and put on a 2 1/2" strait threw resonator
muffler, in a 5"x 32" chrome pipe. It has a deep tone, Its not loud. A
State Trooper told me that its "not bad......very mellow" but its not to
factory sound!
$.02 worth Dan (Southwestern,WA{Brooklyn})
P.S. It(2 1/2" strait threw resonator in a 5"x 32" chrome pipe, bolt on
to stock exhaust system) will be for sale after the Big Exhaust Buy!

New Exhaust - whats your thoughts
Thanks guys!
I currently have a 2.5" system from the cat back with no resonator
and an unknown "Turbo" flow muffler to finish it off. Its o.k. but it
has a nasty bark when revved hard.
So I will go with the 2.5" from cat back with small resonator in the
middle and a nice big shiney stainless steel muffler with a bloody
great outlet. yeah.
cheers
Stu
p.s. Another reason to have a 5 speed - I cant stand the sound of an
auto accelerating with a big exhaust.
