The transmission in my AWD Legacy L took a crap about 2 years ago. It sat in my garage waiting for me to have time and energy to put in a new trans. I finally found one with a matching code and bought it sight unseen. The "new" tranny had come from a junk yard and had been labeled as out of a 91 legacy and LOOKED to be in far better condition than my old broken one. When I picked it up I didn't notice the subtle differences, that is, until I got it home 3 hours later.
My old trans had the male axle studs sticking out of the transfer case, the new one had axle sockets.. hmm I thought.. how am I going to fix this?? after much deliberation I decided to just put the old transfer case and gears from my old trans onto the new one. but after I got both transfer cases off and compared teeth on the pinion gears I found the new the trans had a different gear ratio. So then I set about trying to figure out how to get the pinion gear out of my old trans to put into the new one.
I swapped the drive pinion shaft, and put everything back together. and put the tranny in praying for the best.
I finally took it up the road yesterday, and aside from being low on transmisson fluid she ran great.
Now for the question part of this post.
How can I find out what this trans actually came out of?
My original code: TZ102ZA2AA-MH
Serial # ? 425520
The NEW code: TZ102ZA1AA-JS
Serial # ? 195267
Like I said the new trans looks to be in MUCH better shape and the interior parts practically new in comparison to the old. Especailly the input shaft, it was hell to get put back in becase there was practailly no play when sliding it in.
Thanks
Chris
interesting swap story, Interesting to me anyway.

Perhaps you were hoping for more detailed info, but the chart in the following link says that code is 90-91 Legacy...
