LOTS of Auto-X Pictures - 56kb = certain death

Post by skid542 »

Well season's over and I've been meaning to get some pictures posted up. It was my first season doing Auot-X and I ended up taking 2nd place for the season in Street Tire with a Street Mod PAX. I upgraded the suspension halfway through and can be seen in the pictures from the stance and body roll. Before I upgraded I was told, by multiple people, that I was getting it up on two wheels in some the hard 180's by a couple of inches. Unfortunately I don't have any pics of that :( but it was pretty wild though it also drove me to get the new suspension.

I'm far from the best driver out there but I think I hold my own. You can be the judge, note pictures are cronologically in order through the season -

New suspension installed. 04' STi struts with 245lb King springs on all four corners.

Wet day and I ended up getting a little loose wringing out the new suspension in the rain....

Pretty cool pictures Lee!!

I think I'd prefer a rally-x type event over auto-x. They used to have do rally-x in Houston, I'm not sure why they still don't.

Thanks for the compliments. I owe all credit for the photos to a gentleman named Baily Sampson, the club's unofficial/official photographer. All I have to do it drive :).

I really want to try Rally-X. I grew up driving the dirt roads and really enjoyed it. I've set the suspension up for it as well - stock sways, wedged STi struts, proper bracing, etc. I just have to find a place to do it. But Auto-X has been an absolute blast though. Great opportunity to push the car to it's limits, only spun out twice all season - one of which is pictured above. Considering I'm running 700 treadwear tires I feel that car does pretty good. I've recieved a few compliments from other Subi drivers with regards to representing the old-school. On the last day I was beating 95'ish M3's in raw time. These cars are a little 'big' but they can still do just fine.

Great people and great fun, I fully recommend it. Some of the best 60 sec. I've lived :).

I've started auto-x this season as well. I've been running my 95 Impreza wagon. It's a blast, but sure takes a toll on tires. I've only got a 1.8L but I couldn't imagine running with a turbo!

What kind of tires are you running? What have you done about tire pressure? I have General Exclaim UHP's which do ok in the auto x but the treadblocks are too small and get eaten up pretty easily. I kept my tires at max psi but dropped a few pounds as they heated up over the day.

You should invest in some magnet numbers! Bed, Bath, and Beyond carries sheets of magnet that work really well:

Nice picture. Looks a pretty nice venue.

Auto-X is hard on tires, but it could be worse. Right now I'm running a VERY non-race tire. I'm running Yokohama Avid TRZ's all-seasons. They're an 80k mile, warrentied, tire with a 700 treadwear rating. Not really sticky.... But, I've been running the same tires since last winter and have ample tread to run this winter too though I am considering a snow tire if money allows. I went with this tire because I run it on my OBW and have been pleased with it's all-season and off-road performance. Plus this way I stepped into driving the SS and feeling out the suspension knowing how the tire reacts/lets go/catches since I've driven it on the OBW for 3 years. But I will upgrade next year. The sidewalls are horrendously soft for race use, you can see see the front tires just rolling over onto the sidewalls in some of the close up pictures. Needless to say, I've worn the corners of the blocks down a bit :) - which is why I'm thinking I may get a designated snow and move this set to the OBW.

But again, I've got all season racing, probably a solid 60+ runs on them and there's still plenty of tread left. So... it's a trade off.

As far as pressures, I run around 33psi all around. Any higher and I seemed to lose time and any lower I wasn't comfortable with the sidewall flex. I've got equal spring rates front and rear and would prefere to keep my rotational handling a function of my sway bars only.

It's interesting to hear you comment on the General's. Those were actually an option I was entertaining for next year as I want to keep running in the Street Tire class. Maybe I'll keep looking though.

And thanks for the link on the magnets. I'll think about it but I kinda like having the big painted numbers on the car - makes it real easy for the course workers when I do get a cone. Plus it makes me feel 'cool' driving home with them on the car :).
