Need to replace rear left spring perch and top mount.

Post by greatjorb88 »

Hey there, so my rear left spring perch and top mount are totally screwed up. In fact, I don't know if you're supposed to be able to, but they don't even come apart. Anyway, the issue I'm having is that this screwed up assembly is causing my strut to run into the top mount whenever it must absorb any shock, this results in an extremely loud and unpleasant noise from the back, and I imagine it's not too wonderful for the strut. So what I was wondering is where I can find a '90 rear left top mount and spring perch. And if they don't exist, (I haven't found them anywhere online) would a '95+ model work? Thanks in advance.

They're one piece. I don't understand what you said was happening. Could you describe it better?

I don't understand what could be messed up with the top hat/perch that would cause this.

The 92-94 rear top hats and perches are seperate pieces but the 90-91 are both one piece.

Only thing I can think of is it wasn't tightened down all the way and is coming down out of the strut top mount hole and then catching on the lip where the threads start.

Maybe if you elaborate on what's wrong with it, that could help.

I agree, it sounds like something's loose. Check the "Jesus Nut" and the three bolts that hold the strut top to the car. The Jesus Nut is the single 17mm nut that holds the strut shaft, spring, top hat, and perch together.

95 and up will not work, and if you can't find what you need, chances are I've probably got it. Before you go throwing parts at it though, you should check out what part is actually at fault. I vote for tightening everything up first.

EDIT: Here's a diagram of how everything goes together (except for your spring perch and topmount which you know is different, might be helpful!

k so this is kinda hard to explian but I'll try. It seems that there is some kind of washer loose inside of the top mount and when I took the mount off the strut it was pretty much just flopping around in there. Also, I don't know what's up with it, cause I put it on the correct way when I chaged my struts (with the "out" arrow facing out) but for some reason, that angles it in such a way as to make the strut catch on the lip of the top mount hole where the strut SHOULD be allowed freedom of motion to just come right up past the hole. Instead, it's just banging on that part of the top mount, making a horrible racket and not absorbing the shock. Hope that's a good enough explanation. Thank you!
