22b Headers

Post by William D. Robinson »

Here is some good news for owners of the EJ22T USA turbo engine. You already have essentially the same headers as a 22b. A couple of years ago I decided to upgrade my exhaust and I had a set of Japan market WRX headers from an EJ20G, so I sold my EJ22T setup on the Internet and did the "upgrade". To my amazement, the stock header and the WRX header were identical in every respect except the WRX header has a bung for an O2 sensor on the right (collector) side. I plugged the hole with a bolt and after a bunch of work, I was right back where I started. For what it's worth, I can brag about having WRX headers, but in reality I gained nothing. After this, I looked into the world of headers and discovered that the 22b had the same part number as my E20G header. Later I checked out a bunch of dyno tests and found out that the majority of "bag-of-snakes" type headers actually produced less power than stock. The stock headers are not equal length, but they flow remarkably well. Another point is sound. My son has an aftermarket turbocharged 98 2.5 quad cam engine. Even with a straight pipe, his does not have that "boxer" sound. My car on the other hand has a snarl that totally intimidates 99.99999% of the import street racers that I have encountered.

If your EJ22 is N/A then all you should need is the EJ22T engine
mounts to raise the engine so the headers will fit between the cross
member and engine.

I didn't think there was much difference in the EJ22t and EJ22 mounts
as far as I know STI sells one mount for both and on the headers we
are building the pipes are two into one then go under the crossmember
and then go into one then end up at the same point as stock.
