Turbo Oil Cooler?

Post by kimokalihi »

I have a JDM EJ20 twin turbo motor and it doesn't have the oil cooler pictured in the manual for the EJ22T. Is that normal? Do I need one?

I'm going to be using a single TD04 on this motor.

Only the '91 SS had them as far as USDM Legacies go. My JDM '93 GF8 WRX motor didn't have one either.

Most seem to think it's not needed unless your into STI+ HP range.

I wish....Someday.

Alright, good that makes me feel better. I got the oil pump and water pump on. Maybe when I wake up I'll put the cam seals in and get the sprockets back on and new idlers and timing belt on.

Are you using the 91 Oil pump, because I believe it differs due to that oil cooler.

No, the '91 water pump is different because of the cooler. The oil pumps are the same.

The water pump has an extra nipple on the opposite side of the other two. The hex plug to the waterjacket behind the oil filter also need to be replaced with a special nipple to use the factory oil cooler.

Yes I just installed a brand new oil and water pump yesterday for an EJ22T. Did I get the wrong parts? Do I need to plug something off?

relief valve

Post by kleinkid »

The relief valve operation pressure is different between turbo and non turbo. It is built into the oil pump. It lifts at 71 psi for non turbo and lifts at 85 psi for turbo model. If you want to be application specific, use the applicable oil pump. If you don't care or think it does not matter, use whichever one you want to use.

Water pump(turbo)--the lower nipple on the water pump is for the heater, so I believe you would need to cap off the upper nipple.

PS: I have a Service Manual now, so I am full of it!

OK so now I'm just confused. I don't have an oil cooler so do I have to take that oil pump and water pump off and buy non turbo ones? Or can I get an oil cooler and bolt it on?

What do I do?

Oil pump is fine. The cooler has nothing to do with the oil pump.

If you have the 3rd nipple on your water pump, like in the pic, just cap it off.

I do have the third outlet on the water pump that goes off towards the passenger side of the engine. I was planning on just plugging it off.

OK well that's good news. Thanks. Hopefully today I can get the cam seals replaced and the idlers and timing belt replaced. Then put the intake back on and bolt on the exhaust and turbo and drop the motor in.
