What short shifter would work?

Post by Mattheww044 »

Hey guys I'm trying to find a short shifter that will work for my 92 ss 5mt. Most likely just gonna get a cheap one off of ebay unless one of you guys knows of one that is outstanding

I'm not really sure about this but I don't think there are any short shifters that work in our car. I could easily be wrong but I think they were all made for WRXs.

Maybe not. I bought the Group A shortshifter and it said it was universal fit and I went to put it in my car and the part that the shift linkage bolts up to was too wide to fit in the the shift linkage bracket.

You can buy a whole WRX shift linkage though and a short shifter or I think WRX shifters are a bit shorter than ours too so you could just use the stock shifter from a WRX and the shift linkage. They're pretty cheap. $40-60 shipped.

Forum sticky: GD/GG/GE/GH Impreza style shifter on BC/BF/BJ Legacy. I successfully installed the WRX STi shifter assembly on my 94 TW. Just make sure to get the right parts...

Just for informational purposes....I got one of those cheap Ebay shifters for our old '93 L wagon (this one: here), and it worked okay.

All I had to do was notch the hole in the floor very slightly to clear the factory linkage rod (which the new shifter raises up to shorten the throws) and it shifted fine. No other parts were needed at all. The throws were definitely shorter than stock, bit I'm SURE a whole assembly would be far better.

Also, the stock knob no longer fits the Ebay shifter stick, you need a knob with smaller threads. However, for the $35 I spent, it was well worth it...it also took maybe 20 minutes to install.
