Four years ago the Toyo Proxes were the recommended tire.
What are the best ones now?

well for my standard N/A car I'm digging these Radial X from Michelin. They're rated number one all season IIRC on consumer guide or Consumer reports or one of them.

I have heard great things about the ASXs. I live in Vancouver and it rains a lot here. I have been rolling on Pirelli P-Zero Neros and they have done me wonderful.

hands down the potenza re960as are the highest rated for some time now. have them on mine and they are awesome.. little pricy at 117 each for 205/55/16....

I gave up on "No Seasons" a long time ago. They suck in the summer and suck in the winter.
I may cost a bit more initially for dedicated summer and winter tires, but it evens out in the end. This will be my fourth winter on a set of Pirelli Winter Carving's and they are about half tread. That was with two winters of over 300whp
I couldn't agrree more. When I ran my Roadmaster in the winter time, I ran dedicated Firestone WinterForce Snow Tires. Best thing ever. However there are some all season tires out there that do fairly well all year round, especially for close to stock or stock vehicles.
One reason I run all seasons is that they do well on the paved roads and do well up in the mountains. Most, not all, summer tires are really not a lot of good in the thick mud and gravel.
Real winter tires though make a huge difference in the snow.
FWIW, I'm running Yoko Avid TRZ's and have been pretty happy with them. I run them on the OBW and currently on the T-leg. A little soft on the sidewalls for the T-leg but they work well.
I use performance all-seasons due to all the rain here and occasional dirt road, but snow is promptly plowed and infrequently excessive. I also don't like too much stick with my tires.

Its true that summer tires are pretty lame in gravel or mud. They are generally tarmac biased. My 17" wheels only see summer duty, so naturally they get summer tires. If I were to attend a rally cross or something of that nature, I'd get some agressive all seasons for the dirt and mud shenanigans. My brakes don't let me go smaller than 16's though.
I looked into getting winters on some steels for the Mazda when I bought it, but the steels, if you could find them, cost more than some alloys. Turned out, I didn't really need them.
