need help engine in but will not start
OK So I finally got the engine in to the 94 project RS wagon (see build journal for complete discription) (EJ22T w/ EJ25D heads/intake) It cranks over fine, but isnt starting. It will occasionally fire , but not start.
I did the u-check mode and all it does is flash on and off slowly, no codes, just continuos flashing.
We checked all connectors to ensure they were connected, and that the IAC hose is hooked up.
I used the dohc cam pullies with the original cam sensor which should work since they have the same triggers.
Timing is dead on with t-belt.
Any thoughts? Thanks for the help.

Check fuel pressure. Double check the injector connectors for tightness and correct routing. Check actual spark @ plugs. Double check plug wire routing.
From what I understand the main thing the ECU looks at to start firing and injecting is the presence of the crank sensor signal.

Its got good spark at the plugs.
I might have the pass side injectors hooked up wrong I am not sure yet.
We are putting fresh gas in it soon too. The car has been sitting for about 4 months with the gas needle on E, so maybe thats the problem, no gas.
You always overlook the most simplest things LOL.
Updates in about an hour.

Shoot I think I may have lined up the wrong timing marks on the crank. Are 2.5L and 2.2l timing marks differant? I know on the 2.5 you use the dot on the crank gear, and on the 2.2 everyone says to use the line on the crank sensor signal plate. Is this right or are they the same?
NTL the motor turn over fine by hand so if it is wrong I dont think it would hurt anything.

Yup, I timed it wrong. I used the little triangle on the gear and not the line on the crank sensor trigger. Which one is the right one? The haynes manual shows the little triangle, but other manuals show the timing line. I cant believe I forgot this, I have only done about 5 t-belt jobs in the past year.
I think Ill be redoing it.
Damn. I hope everything is OK.
here is a pic of how it is supposed to be. I used the triangle thing to the right. is this right or wrong?

OK the timing belt is on correctly after a check.
has 1/4 tank of fresh gas.
All the injectors are wired up correctly according to the wireing schematic.
fuel pressure is 38lbs cranking.
Maf is hooked up but the turbo inlet has a small kink. Air can be felt going into the engine while cranking though.
No CEL codes.
Still wont start, but it does fire intermittantly. Any thoughts? Please help, I have been at this thing for a while and would love to have start up.

Which Timing gear are you using?iluvdrt wrote:Yup, I timed it wrong. I used the little triangle on the gear and not the line on the crank sensor trigger. Which one is the right one? For all the EJ22 motors you need to use the line on the BACK of the crank gear. You can see it in my picture.

I am using the gear that came on the motor. The cam gear is the plastic gear that goes with the EJ25D DOHC head. I know that will work.
For timing the crank initially I used the triangle, put the belt on and turned it over by hand a bunch of times then put it in the car. Of course it didnt start. The crank was 90 degrees out. I know they were not hitting the valves because the motor turned over fine.
I then retimed it using the line on the back of the crank gear, and it still wont run. It was timed perfectly.
I did get it to start today for a brief second. It fired right up, than died and sputtered again.
I am going to do a comp check on it, and redo the turbo inlet and IC pipeing to something more permanent to ensure it is a soild seal between those items. I know the ej22 will not run if it has a bad maf seal, or any air leaks afterwards.
I am still confused about the code 45 pressure sensor. Will this keep it from starting or effect anything with a MBC and fuel cut defender installed?

Its good. It was the MAF as I thought. We just needed to do a better job hooking everything up. I cant believe how sensitive it is to air flow.
Thanks to all of you for the help, it was greatly appreciated.
