need help

im very new to subarus ......well on my way home i started smelling a wierd burning smell pulled over looked under the hood and noticed the compressor thingy next to the altenator was molten red hot its on the right side of the altenator what is this piece called

On the right side when you look at it (driver side) or right side with the car (passenger side). Chances are you are prolly talking about the A/c compressor, clutch is locked up on it then and it's about to grenade. Unless you have air suspension. A picture will help :-D

Just remove it for now. Pull the belt will be fine, just sucks loosing any refrigerant if there is some.

If you want an A/C compressor. I have one. I'll clean it up and take pictures. It still works and everything. I'll let it go for $20 plus shipping. Don't know the miles b/c it's been replaced(has R-134 sticker on it). I'm just taking the a/c system out of my car. Sorry for the Hi-jack.
