Does anyone know in what years the water-to-air intercoolers where
made in the silver/brushed aluminum color? Where they only sold in
Japan?

Not sure about the silver brush finish ones, but the black ones that
came in all Liberty/Legacy RS turbo's came out from 89-93. I think
they went to every country bar the US. We have heaps of them here in
Australia that the importers bring in!
George, Australia.

>From what I understood, the Legacy GT (sedan & wagon) had a silver
IC, the RS had the black one.
The Japanese Legacy RA was an RS-RA not a GT-RA, basically it had a
blueprinted engine plus a few other bits over standard RS (not quite
sure though, maybe CR 5-speed?).
Interesting points:
All Japanese GT sedans were auto.
All Japanese RS sedans were manual.
There was never an RS wagon sold in Japan but there was a GT wagon.
You could get the GT wagon with a manual tranny (effectively an RS
wagon) but they're pretty rare.
If I'm wrong, please correct me. This is my understanding from the
local Subby dealer...

I have a manual Liberty RS Wagon - Aust delivered. They are indeed rare
here in Oz but manual GT wagons seemed to be more common as imports in
NZ when I was looking. Some found their way to Oz as well, particularly
on the east coast. In GT wagons though, the auto was a lot more common
as you said. The Aust Liberty RS sedan and wagon were manual only.
With the Aust RS Wagons, I suspect they could easily have been manual
GTs because they were completely rebadged here as Libertys. The 'RS
TURBO' decals were stickers, not badges, and were an Australian only
thing, judging by the handwritten instructions on where and how to fit
them.
In the photos I found in classifieds or that people sent me, I never saw
a silver IC. They were all black - sedan, wagon ,manual, auto. I was
only looking at the facelifted model however.

All below is generally true, the key thing being the difference between a GT
and RS interior, apart from the mechanical specs of course.
However, with these early versions it was possible to order many factory
options which create exceptions. I have actually seen a genuine GT sedan
with an original manual transmission. ie. the original order from the
factory must have called for someone who wanted the extra bits of the GT
interior, in a sedan, but with a manual transmission.

All that seems pretty well correct. The only silver IC i have seen
was at an Aust rally where they were rallying a Legacy RA. The silver
IC had an STi marking on it....

I have a silver intercooler on my car and I am sure that at least two
of the engines that came from Germany had these, also the EJ20 that is
supposed to be from Japan that I am working on also has one. There is
a picture of it in the files section under oil separator.jpg
