blown trans, or blown clutch. please help!!
I have a 93 subaru legacy L with 201,500 miles. I cold started my subaru last night after sitting for 9 hours and while running in neutral the car suddenly stalled very hard as if I had put it in first and let off the clutch at 1,500rpm, which was what it was running at cause it was cold. when I restarted the car, it would then only run in neutral with the clutch disengaged. It will go in gear but when I try to pull away it doesnt do anything but stall and then its hard to get it back into neutral, it will not move at all in gear and it will move in neutral, but It acts like its in high gear. and even then it drives a few feet and then I have to stop or else I'll stall. I replaced the clutch 2 years ago, but I dont think the shop that did it ever resurfaced the flywheel, because I've had clutch chatter for the last two years, even after a few clutch adjustments . any ideas or suggestions as to what it is? bad trans? blown clutch? hmmm.
Normally aspirated car? Broken clutch cable, maybe... How does the pedal feel?
But if it's acting like it's stuck in high gear, the box may have internal problems, like the gear slider arm broke or something, and it's only going into 3rd instead of 1st... If you can't see anything on the outside, I'd say it's time to look for a replacement trans or rebuild.

sorry I didnt mention in my post, but yeah its naturally asperated. the clutch cable is still intacted. the pedal feels good, and im able to shift into every gear, it just wont move. when I try to pull away in gear it wont move at all it will just stall. its like pulling away with the brake on. I cant see anything visually wrong. except for where the clutch cable attaches to the trans that part its attached to is torn, im not sure if thats the shifting fork, but it doesnt look right, although its been like that for the past three years so im not sure if thats the problem.
That sounds like it is stuck in one gear,(presumably high since that is what you suggest it feels like if you try to move it in neutral.), then when you put it into another gear the box locks up because the two gears are both trying to turn the shafts at different speeds. Since it happened whilst sitting running I would guess that it is low on oil and something has seized in there... a gear to a shaft perhaps.

Your hill holder cable snapped, permanently pulling your parking brake. There's nothing wrong with your clutch or your transmission. It's your hill holder. That's just my educated guess

Good point. I re-read it and it sounds like the shift rod let go of an op. sleeve and fork leaving it in either 5th or 4th gear.
