weird noises

Post by SILINC3R »

i got my oil changed about three weeks aga and its already making these clikikng noises again. ih ave put full synthetic in it before and then it runs fine its just that it is expensive to do this. my dad told me and a guy at Auto Zone said that once you use full you are not suppossed to go back to regular cause it hurts the engine. why is this. i guess i will be putting full in it for now on but here is a video so you can here it. it is kind of hard to hear but maybe you can make it out.

it is the lifters I am assuming. What weight oil are you using? What do you mean once you use full?? You can switch from synthetic and back, but supposedly can be bad for seals. Also you can sttretch out your oil changes more if you use synthetic.

Does it go away after a few mins? I get it too when I park on an non-level parking spot. I figure the oil drains from the higher head, but gets pumped back into the valve train after a couple mins.

no it does not. it might quiet down but it doesnt stop unless i put more oil into it. then it will start again within a week. however if i put synthetic in it stops for alteast a month. also the car does not leak or blow blue smoke or run hot. have water andoil temp gauge

You know, I was chasing down a ticking sound in my engine for months, only to find out I was hearing the fuel injectors and they're SUPPOSED to make that sound. Thought it was the valve lifters for so long; did everything including bleed the hydraulic lash adjusters. Finally got my hands on a stethoscope, and sure enough, it was just the injectors the whole time.

By the way, what do you mean when you say "I used Lucas oil Stabilizer so I don't know what the weight was."? I hope you know that Lucas Stabilizer is an oil ADDITIVE, not oil itself. For example, if your car holds 4.8 quarts of oil, then you would refill it (after the old oil is all drained out) with 1 quart of Lucas stabilizer and 3.8 quarts of regular oil. So the fact that you used Lucas oil Stabilizer shouldn't have anything to do with what weight of oil you use. My concern here is that you seem to think that Lucas Oil Stabilizer IS synthetic motor oil. It's not. It's just a synthetic additive to improve the performance of your regular oil. And yes, it would get expensive to fill your car up with 4.8 quarts of Lucas oil Stabilizer every time the oil is changed!

Next time you change your oil, just be sure the bottle says "Synthetic Motor Oil", and has a weight such as "10W-30" on the bottle- not "Synthetic Oil Additive" (which is what Lucas is. Which is why there was no "weight" on the bottle when you looked)

Also, just be sure, as you're adding more and more oil to quiet the sound, that you don't overfill it. Even if overfilling it might temporarily quiet down the sound, it is very bad for your engine on the long term.

yea but was the ticking loud. i can hear it in the car sometimes. the last time i used Lucas, i swear it said it was full synthetic so i got a quart of that as well as a gallon of Castrol GTX and had no problems for the rest of the summer. but this time it just said oil stabilizer so i was kind of confused but bought it anyway.

Thanks for the help

And just remember that Lucas makes over a dozen different products, from synthetic oil itself to oil stabilizer to fuel additives, to engine cleaners to fuel line driers, etc. So just make sure and read the bottle carefully so you're actually getting engine oil and not one of their other products. And if you add some sea foam to the oil, let me know if it helps the ticking or any other problems. I put some sea foam into the pistons following the directions on the can, and it helped a great deal with overall engine ferformance. I've never put it through the crank case, though. I'd be interested to see what it does.

did the seafoam and recorded as best as i could since i did by myself
also i did it twice. after the first time i didnt think there was enough smoke so i went back to autozone and had another go

the first time 1/3 in oil, 1/3 in gas, 1/3 through brake booster

the second time 2/3 throught brake booster, 1/3 in oil

total cost: 5 bucks in gas, 10 bucks for first can and 10 bucks for second= 25 dollars

well post videos as soon as i can. should be by tonight.

why do you need any oil stabilizer?

bah i dont really need it, but since my engine is a bit old i tough it could be good to had a little with the oil.

i saw a little hand made gear system.
one side had oil stabilizer and on the other size regular oil, and from what have seen when you turn the gear oil stabilizer really help oil stick more on the gear than the regular oil so i tough it could be good.

why is that not good?
i got a bottle here, that why i am asking question before putting some,

I prefer my oils/fluids to be pure, nothing added. So if I wanted oil to stick to gears ( which the engine does not have) I would use thicker oil.

+1 for the fuel injectors though that noise I hear most of the time even in the cabin.

+1 also for the seafoam. Its a must on an older car especially if your not sure of past maintenance and care.

The very best hydraulic lifter cleaner is Marvel's Mystery Oil, it's a red bottle.

DO NOT MIX REGULAR AND SYNTHETIC OIL!
