People from Cali chime in.

Post by Skruyd »

Ok, I'll be moving to California by the end of the year. Basically because there is nothing left for me here in Tennessee and I already decided which school I wanted to go to In San Francisco.

Here's the thing tho. Because I'm rebuilding my motor I really don't want to sell the car. I would rather bring it with me. The only thing that I'm changing on it is the Intake. I'm putting a FMIC on it. I still have all the stock parts so that's not an issue.

Even tho I don't have an EO number. Would I be ok? If I have to I can always just swap the parts every two years for the testing. Or should I just sell the car, and start fresh with one when I get there?

It would really suck to sell. I've lost my STI and now I don't want to lose my SS. Nine months left to go for a decision.

Keep your stock parts to put on every other year.

Anything that can't be seen is no problem, but anything that can be should look stock.

A good tune is usually good for both power and emissions (to a point).

That being said......yes, stay away.

What about an exemption number for a part designed for a WRX? Would that work?

No. E.O. numbers are only for the vehicles stated. Many E.O. numbers DO cover many cars, but they never cover cars/parts/installation not specified.

True story....

My brother bought a used '01 2.5RS a while back. It came to him with a WeaponR intake and Borla headers, among other things. The foam filter on the intake was detriorated and crumbling so we replaced it with a universal K&N cone filter. The headers cracked (repeatedly) so we welded them up, but, to get a good weld we cut off a small bracket to gain access for good pentitration.

First smog went to a generic "test only" smog place. Passed with flying colors, no questions asked. Fast forward two years and this time around the technition asks to see the E.O. stickers for the intake and the headers. My brother is "Huh? It was this way when I bought it, and both the selling dealer and last place passed it with no problems".

So we called WeaponR. Reply was something like "Sure we can send you a new sticker. Just send us pictures of the intake installed in the car and we'll send you a sticker."

"That's not our filter, we can't give you sticker."

"Why"

"The E.O. number is only good for exactly as stated in the paperwork from the state. We could get in trouble if we send you sticker with that filter installed. Buy a new filter from us and we'll be glad to send you a sticker."

"Um....OK, I guess"

Borla was argueably worse. They turned us down because we "modified" the headers when I cut the bracket off to get a good weld. We ended up picking up a factory header from 2.5RS to get it smogged.

Make it LOOK factory and run good and you'll have no worries. I've smogged a car with a completly different motor in it before, but it looked good :P .

ok, that is all I was wondering. So basically I just have to take the FMIC off and replace stock piping every time I go get this thing smog when I move. I don't mind the hassle to do it every two years. appreciate the answers XD.

An intercooler wont fail your smog. It shouldnt, if the tech knows. Most tech's dont and they will fail you automaticly cause they do not want to put their name on the smog cert.

If one tech fails you, go see another. On my '87 RX i had a Saab intercooler on it. The first tech I took it too wouldnt smog it cause it was a Saab part on a Subaru. The second tech I took it too knew the reg's and didn't worry about it.

Smog Tech's here are responsible for the cars they inspect. If they pass you, and later you get pulled over and a ticket for a modified intake, the state will go after the tech who passed you and they can get fined or have their smog cert. revoked. So alot of them are scared when they see a heavily modified engine... no matter if the work was done correctly and under the law.

Stay away........
