Swapping a 1992 EJ22 Legacy Engine into a 1996 Impreza RS

Post by redlineracer »

I am thinking about buying a rolling chassis off a guy in norcal for $100. He has a 1996 Impreza 2.2 RS with a 5spd transaxle, running gear, flywheel and clutch. All it needs is an engine, engine wiring harness and engine ECU. I was wondering if my 1992 Legacy LS Wagon's engine would fit into the Impreza. Would the ECU be a problem since its programmed to the Legacy? Im just hoping it would match up and just run after that. Thanks!

The Impreza RS didn't come out until 98, so it's just a regular Impreza.

The drivetrain will fit, but it won't be plug-n-play. Your 92 Legacy is OBDI while the 96 Impreza is OBD2. The Impreza has an EGR valve while your Legacy doesn't. You'll have to swap crank and cam sensors. I'm sure there's other stuff as well.

Also, I dunno if you all have inspections in OR, but in some cases, it's illegal to swap an older engine into a newer car. So look into that.

Just find more 1996 or newer Impretzel stuff...should be easy

Or just toss an EJ20G in there and be done with it
