No rear tails or front running lights????Help

Post by 94legacy2.2 »

So I just found out I have no lights on the rear except brake lights.
Also no running lights on the front.

The switch on the column doesnt turn them on either.
Question is does anyone have any good diags for me to use or a wiring diagram?

I have a feeling it might be the multi function switch on the steering column, does this sound logic?

Ill check fuses once I get off work but I need some insite so i can check then when I get off. I drive both to work and home in the dark so I kinda need them to work today

Thanks
Tyson

Ok a little update.
I still dont have lights. I check the wiring to the back and nothin. I also checked the relay (under the driver side of the dash at the top of fuse panel) and found it clicks when I turn the light switch on. So its not the Multi function switch (that I know of)
I forgot to check for voltage at the fuse (#5) but if I jump 12volts to it it turns the taillights on. It Doesnt pop the existing fuse in place. But to be sure I installed a 3amp fuse and t'd out of that fuse spot and ran a wire to ignition source. (I know its ghetto but I need lights now and ran out of time on diag)

But as of right now I havent found the problem. Can anyone help out with some more diag and wiring diagrams?

yes I pulled trhe fuse out and looked at it. Its good. Its a 15amp fuse. The cover calls for a 10amp but either way its not blown at all. For shits and giggles I replaced it anyways with another 15amp and still nothin. But since I jumped it I replaced it again with a 3amp fuse so it doesnt toast the circuit if it magically works again

I checked my hanes. looks like there is a fuse in the main box under the hood, says number 23. should be a 20A. That will prevent the juice from getting to the fuse box in the kick panel. look there.

I had a very similar problem on my friends 91 a year ago. His brake lights/running lights didnt work at all, and the blower motor did nothing. After much swearing and running through the wiring diagram i accidentally moved a wire and everything worked. Turns out one of the main power wires into the power block under the fuse box (under the drivers dash) was loose. The female spade had spread apart enough to lose continuity. I would fiddle with the wires down there if you have exhausted all other options. Ill grab a picture of it when i get a chance here.

Ok thanks. I checked the fuse and its good. I have 12volts on both sides of the fuse.
I checked the fuse under the dash and it has no voltage but the relay still clicks when I turn the light switch on but no lights.

Could the switch on the steering column be bad and causing all this?

ok do this for me because there are a few circuits here in the book.

1. your saying the parking lights all around dont work?
2. the parking light bypass switch on top of the column does nothing also?
3. the brake light DO work.

Do the turn signals work?
Do the hazards work?

I need more info to help.

1: Correct, all 4 parking lights dont work (all 4 corners)
2: Correct, parking light bypass switch does not work or do anything
3: Brake lights work perfect

Turn signals work on all 4 corners and same with the hazards

Thanks Mike for the help

ok here is what the schematic shows as the parking light circuit:

Startting at the main fuse box under the hood
1. There is a SBF-3 FUSE (45A) fusable breaker or link that powers all the light circuits from what I can tell.
2. then you have the previously mentioned FUSE 23 (20A) that supplies the juice for the parking light circuit TO-THROUGH the relay at the kick panel fuse box. Brown wire
3. When the realy is enrgized by the multi switch at the column voltage passes through the relay, up to the bypass switch where if it is off the voltage passes to the fuse box to FUSE 5 (10A)
4. From there it is a straight shot to the all the lights. Red wire.

ok heres what it looks like.

It looks like the parking switch at the top of the column bypasses the relay and sends the voltage from the FUSE 23 directly to the FUSE 5 in the kick panel.
The clicking relay only means the the coil must be getting power from somewhere else. Its not clear in the schematic where its getting the coil power although it may be FUSE 12 at the fuse box in the kick.
Everything points to FUSE 23 in the fuse box under the hood. Make sure you test the fuse in place and read 12 volts from both sides of the fuse, you know there is an opening on each end so you can get a test lead on the fuse while its plugged in?
Without having the car in front of me its difficult.
Check that bypass switch on your cloumn, make sure its off really good. If its between off and on somehow you wont get anything going to your parking lights.

Thanks for the thanks, Trouble shooting is fun so dont worry about it. You should get yourself a haynes for like 10 bucks though :)
