Since my transmission was taken out of the car, I have problems with it (or maybe is it a flywheel). Sometimes when I want to easily brake with the engine, while releasing the clutch (shifting from 4. to 3. or 3. to 2. gear for instance), it sounds and feels like my transmission or engine shudders.
What could it be? Transmission mounts maybe? What can I check?
And there is one more thing (since transmission removal): when I have the car in gear or in neutral with the clutch disengaged, I can hear some rubbing sound somewhere from the transmission, when I press the clutch it goes away. Transmisson oil was changed not long ago, and the level is at the max. Is a bearing loud or what?
The car is a 1991 Legacy 2.2 (EJ22) 4WD with manual 5-gear transmission.
Wow, I am experiencing the exact same thing. I Didnt think I would ever find any reference to my current issue. i have a 92 legacy turbo 5-speed.
This started happening about a week ago, I sorta ignored it, figured it had something to do with the cold (its -30 Celcius here lately).
Then, the noise got louder so i started investigating. I found that my tranny fluid was really low, so I topped that off and everything seemed fine, for about 2 days.
So my first assumption was, hey I have a leak, Ill just top it off and try to figure where the leak is coming from later on. But when I went to top up the tranny fluid, it was still good.
The car drives fine, and the noise seems to get better once the car warms up, but has never done this for the 5 years I have owned the car. i will continue looking into the issue, just wondering if you are still having problems? or if ignoring problem worked?
Ok, what frequency do you think this shudder is compared to either the wheels or the engine?
Is it for instance at one shudder per wheel revolution? Four shudders per wheel revolution? It doesn't have to be exact but the driveshaft to the rear wheels goes at about one quarter the wheel revs.
If it isn't tied to the wheel speed then it might be tied to engine speed, perhaps at engine revs, perhaps it varies with which gear you are in?
Are there any vibrations when accelerating? Cornering? How do you feel the vibration... through the steering? Gear-lever? Clutch pedal? Seat of pants? Deep throbbing you sense/feel in your torso?
