Thinking about picking up 96 Outback (question)

Post by txl146 »

Sorry, I wasn't sure if this is right place to post this question as this forum is for 89-94 BC-BF Legacy.

Anyway, I am thinking about picking up a 96 Outback with 2.2L engine with over 200k miles and blown 4th gear.

Car seems to drive fine and seller claims that timing belt was replaced within last 20k miles with no mechanical problem other than the tranny issue.

Do you think it's worth paying $800 for the car? car has typical rust in the rear wheel well and dent on hood/rear door quarter panel.

Wanted to get your opinion as I am not too familiar with older legacy/outback (I own 02 WRX).

Thanks guys.

get it. decent price as long as it doesnt need much else. you should be able to find a tranny for a decent price and while its out replace the clutch and seals.

Auto or manual? The 2.2L was Subaru's most reliable EJ engine, so that's not bad.

Depending on the trans type, you'll have completely different reasons for not getting 4th gear. I'm betting this is an auto and it won't come out of 3rd gear (common issue on high mileage 4eats).

'96 2.2's had the 5-speed; 2.5s (head gasket issues) had the 4EAT.

Probably the best OB, since the 2.2 was/is bullet-proof.

Check for torque bind (more common in ATs) by doing figure 8's and see if the tires drag, but for that price I'd still get it.

Ensure the rust isn't too bad underneath, as I've seen some that are rusted thru...not safe.

$800 is a good deal!

Great winter/beater car @ the very least.

Good luck.
