Okay guys here it is!!!
For months I've heard people arguing what the best size exhaust system is for
the Legacy Turbo(CDN). I'm not sure which to believe. Is it better to have a
2.5 inch or a 3 inch pipe? My car has the stock baby turbo, Hallman boost
controller (13 PSI), and a snorkusless K&N drop in filter. Thus far I have
also installed a 3 inch downpipe that goes into a 2.5 inch cat. The pipe from
the cat to the muffler is still stock as it doesn't seem like it wants to rust
out. Is this stock pipe 2 1/4 inch? The stock pipe goes into an after market
Vibrant muffler with a 2.5 inch inlet and outlet.
Question is am I loosing significant power with this setup due to the stock
pipe? If I should upgrade the stock section should I get a 2.5 inch or a 3
inch pipe put in? I've heard that the bigger the better for a turbo car!!
But I've also heard that if the car isn't powerful enough you will loose
low-end torque!!! What do you guys say???

I'm getting a custom pipe made by someone in Washington.
Based on the end result, we'll decide whether it will be
something that we'd like to make available to the community.
It should be reasonably affordable as well.
Plans are for: 2.5" mild-steel, twin-dump, catless with O2 bung.
Basically a bolt-in replacement, add cat downstream along with
upgraded system of at least 2.5".

Things is - depends on where u drive most and how u drive. If u drive like a nutter, going up and down the gears all the time, then it doesn't matter if you lose a little bit of low end torque because you wont even notice it. If, like me, you spend a lot of time in the city then, ok, it could mean a bit more dropping a gear (assuming you have an MT). However, the chances are if you drive around town mostly (again like myself) then there's little chance of a short blast anyway. Nothing much really happens south of 3000rpm anyway.
My opinion is since you're already modding the car then it makes sense to go for 3 inch throughout to pave the way for pending mods which, inevitably, will at some point involve swapping the stock blower for a beefier unit. I recently did a change from stock diameter exhaust to a catless (was catless to start with) 3 inch throughout and I can't say I've noticed any noticable drop in low end torque. In fact, spool up has improved marginally and general drivability has improved because of the significantly increased flow. The turbine makes a much louder noise now and top end is incredibly smooth (car used to vibrate madly at sustained "high speeds"). Porting the stock manifold has probably contributed too.
In summary, my opinion is 3 inch pipe wherever possible - that's my vote. Others with differing views/experiences?
