M/T Problems... Suggestions..??

Post by my93liberty »

Hey guys,
I've got a 93 Liberty 2.2l non-turbo and I have a problem with
up-changing from 1st gear to 2nd, where it crunches if I try to
change up at any point above 4500rpm. If I change gears any where
below 4500rpm it's fine, but as soon as I go over that it crunches.
It's only from 1st to 2nd. The other gears range is fine.
Also I find it difficult to down gear to 1st whilst I'm in motion,
say if I'm slowing down to stop and I try to select back to 1st at
around 15km/h. I have to make an almost complete stop if I want to
get into 1st. Has anyone experienced this problem before..?
Do you think this is my Syncromesh..??
I'm thinking about draining my M/T Oil and replacing it with a new
stuff. Hopefully this will help the crunching problem..
Does anyone have any particular preferences in Manual Tranny Oils or
Additives that they are using currently or in the past..??

My cars clocked just over 115,000kms.

Any feedback would be greatful.
Thanx guys..

Dann...

I went through this problem with a few tranamissions and what I found
was that very few things really worked. One was to drain all the oil
and replace it with automatic transmission fluid along with a can of
Rislone this will clean things up if deposits on the synchros is the
problem. The other is a product made by BG called Synchro Shift it is
expensive ($80 a fill) this works and will cure this problem in most
transmissions unless something is broken or totally worn out like
mine was it still had a problem downshifting to 2nd as it had a
broken synchro but all other gears worked fine. I finally gave up and
bought a low milage verIII transmission and filled it with the BG
stuff and it has worked perfectly for 15,000 miles.

All 3 Subarus I have owned have had the downshifting
into first difficulty. I also notice it a little bit
on the MY2002 cars I drive at work everyday. I think
it's just a Suby thing. I've always thought it's
probably better for the transmission to not be able to
so I've never really considered it a problem.

I think it's a synchromesh prob because I have a 3rd to 4th "crunch" sometimes on my 1.8 NA which used to be fine up until last year. The 1st gear thing is a characteristic of the gearbox because I have had the same on my 1.8 NA since new and also on my 2.0 GT.

Milehial2000,
Thanx for your reply mate... Mutually to Dfullerton &
Grant...
So you put Automatic Dexron II fluid into a Manual Tranny..??
And that works does it...? Hmm, I never knew you could do that...hehe

So where do you get this Rislone and BG Synchro Shift stuff...??
I've never actually taken notice of these products in Australia..

I'll be on the lookout for those products so I can give em a shot,
hopefully they can help my dilema...

Cheers mate...!!

Dann..
