Help with CELs please!

Post by speeddemon »

Ok, so heres the deal. bought a 92 leggy turbo with 280 000km 3 months ago or so, since then the CEL has come on about 3 times. The first couple times, I just reset the ECU and the CEL stayed off for weeks or more. The last time it came on I read the codes and got the following...
11= crank angle sensor
12 = starter switch
21= water temp sensor
22 = knock sensor
23 = air flow sensor
35 = purge solenoid valve
42 = idle switch
This puzzles me because the car seems to run fine and the light seems to come on when the car sits for a while or gets really wet or icy. I am wondering if there is just one fault causing all the codes or maybe a loose connection or wire. I should probably mention that I have installed a IC and MBC but the problem appeared way before I installed them.

Have any of you guys experienced this before? I am really stumped on this one, so any idea or advise is greatly appreciated!

I would also like to thank the guys on this site for posting so much useful info about these cars. This site has helped me alot even though I am no subie newbie (hey that rhymes haha).

^like I said, I reset the ecu and the CEL goes away for weeks. do you mean there is a way to clear codes without resetting?

Are you sure you are resetting the codes. Make to check the codes after you reset them to make sure there are none present. You might not actually be resetting them and these could be old old codes.

^I've left the battery disconnected overnight and pumped the brakes after disconnecting and before reconnecting, so I'm pretty sure the codes are fresh.

Don't be pretty sure. After you reset them then check the codes again before starting the car. The light should just blink.

just as always, you guys were right.

I was under the impression that resetting the ecu would automatically clear the codes, but I guess I was wrong. So, I cleared the codes and now its just a matter of waiting till the light comes on again.

Thanks for not jumping down my throat like a bunch of nazicocks (look it up on urbandictionary) for this little misunderstanding haha

I just hadn't gotten a chance yet....here goes....[insert nazicock jargon put downs]

On a more serious note, when I first started working on the first gen legacy's coming from a GM car background I was surprised when disconnecting the battery did not immediately reset the codes. These days I use the code reset procedure on the surrealmirage site which actually gives you positive feedback that the codes have been reset. The only thing I have noticed with that procedure is that if there is a current code, it doesn't seem to reset the codes. Although its clear that it doesn't from the blink pattern. Then I guess you need to do the battery disconnect with a pump of the break pedal to discharge the capacitor.

If I understand your last post, I believe that the 'current code' stays active until it's fixed...regardless of the reset/clear procedure.

If you've not checked/replaced the knock sensor, do that....they crack and it appears to be a common issue....I've replaced 3 on 3 different cars.

And when fixed the car will come alive!

This is correct. If you have an "active" code or problem, you shouldn't be able to clear that code.
